Shop quality items – old and new – at the monthly Misfit Thrift and Gift Fest. Held at The Spice Yard for the first Sunday of every month, this thrift fest boasts over 50 vendors selling clothes, food, a rum distillery and live music.
SHOPPING WITH A MISSION
The Misfit Thrift and Gift Fest was the brainchild of Laura Rainbird way back in 2013. Back then it was originally known as the Official Second-Hand Market, but it still held the same goals: supporting local artists and businesses in a sustainable way. Today, Rainbird’s Misfit Thrift and Gift Fest is the biggest second-hand market in the city, with six venues running a month all around Cape Town.
CLOTHES, FOOD, COFFEE AND MORE
What you’ll find is a treasure trove of handmade, second hand and new items on sale for customers to browse. There will also be food stalls, coffee stands and even rum-tasting on offer. To add to the trendy, modern atmosphere, there will be a variety of electronic music playing while you explore what’s on offer.
MORE THAN JUST A CLOTHING MARKET
The Spice Yard is also home to other interesting projects. One such project is Cape of Storms Distilling Co., a small independently owned Craft Rum Distillery which offers tours and tastings to give the customer an inside view of the rum distilling process. Try some of their award-winning rum with coffee or chocolate. Stereoculture is a bar and cafe also located in The Spice Yard centred around listening to and appreciating music outside of a club environment with a focus on quality and exploring different genres.
ARRIVE EARLY FOR THE BEST EXPERIENCE
Doors open at 10am sharp, and due to the 50 person capacity limit, you may have to wait a bit to get in. Be sure to bring cash as there is no ATM on site. If you are interested in having your stall be a part of the Misfit Thrift and Gift Fest, email thriftfest123@gmail.com.
