6 immersive themes, one being the best in Africa
Billed as the biggest selling comedian in the United Kingdom (UK), Michael McIntyre heads to Cape Town shores for a two-night show at the GrandWest Grand Arena, on Thursday, 18 and Friday, 19 April 2013, as part his South African tour.
Since his big break in 2006 at the Royal Variety Performance (the annual UK gala entertainment evening attended by the reigning monarch and senior members of the British Royal Family), the stand-up artist has gone on to firmly plant himself as a comedic master both in the local and international comedy realm.
Though some critics judge his comedy routines as “conventional” and “playing it too safe”, this award-winning flamboyant performer’s observational humour – one Guardian reviewer described it as “expertly physicalised patter about everyday matters” - is wildly popular with the general public.
After a series of performances and appearances as a guest on a number of shows, including the award-winning British comedy chat show, Alan Carr: Chatty Man, and Top Gear, McIntyre went on to release two of the fastest selling UK stand-up DVDs of all time: “Life and Laughing” and his second offering, “Hello Wembley”, which sold more than 1.4 million copies. As a follow-up to his successful debut DVD, the stand-up comedian released his bestselling autobiography under the same title, “Life and Laughing”, and has since become the youngest ever emcee to host the Royal Variety Performance.
Following his success on stage, McIntyre went on to enjoy 15 minutes of fame on television. The comedic giant briefly hosted his own TV series, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow in 2009 and 2010 on BBC 1, and was a judge on the hit ITV1 show Britain's Got Talent. But, following the criticism and controversy that came from making 9-year-old aspiring comedian David Knight cry – McIntyre describes it as an “uncomfortable” experience – the hit laugh-master left the show to focus on his own career.
Much to the delight of his fans (and McIntyre’s bank balance), the talented comedian enthralled audiences at over 70 venues in 2012 with his production “Showtime”, subsequently making him one of the world’s most successful comics.
