Transitions at Grande Provence Gallery

Paintings, deconstructed paintings and collages by Henry Hopkins

Grande Provence is privileged to present their first exhibition for 2011 by Henry Hopkins.

Henry is also a designer and Brand specialist from Cape Town. His work reflects the strong influence of construction on daily living and how the creation of large structures ultimately lead to the destruction of the natural landscape.

Henry raises the questions concerning nature in the construction process by destructing his work , dissecting  the work with a scalpel knife and then reapplying, in the process changing the meaning and the perception of the work, flat 2 dimentional work become structures reassembled on a new back round or landscape.

The large scale paintings also have a strong structural/ linear quality enhanced by the different textures in the work, also relying on the play of light to make them come alive. As a result, Henry’s work reminds us to stop and observe the seeming success of bigger, better, higher and faster.

Although Henry is the featured artist, there will be a few other works on display.

The structural quality and craftsmanship of the sculptures by Craig Muller, although different in theme and inspiration, compliment the exhibition work with its mechanical aesthetic.

The theme of deconstruction carries through to the photographic work of George Hugo, shown in the Project Room. Buildings and outcast communities reflect the sensitivity of the constructed world, the short lifespan of buildings not being maintained and the communities that take refuge in these defunct constructions.

Sally Arnold’s work is purely nature inspired – large botanical paintings that also feed the inspiration for her  functional design pieces, ranging from soft furniture to rugs to high end furniture design – a range of Sally’s work can be viewed in the shop and the ‘little Gallery’.

Well-known S.A. artist, academic and curator Emma Willemse will be the opening speaker when the exhibition opens on Sunday 16 January at 11h00.
