American students from the George Washington University (GWU) in Washington DC take to the stage at various venues in Cape Town on Saturday, 25, Sunday, 26 and Tuesday, 28 May 2013 as part of their larger South African national tour.
As was the case in their 2009 visit, the choral ensemble will, once again, perform with the University of Cape Town Choir at the Centre for the Book, on Saturday, 25. Additionally, the seasoned group will put on shows at St. George’s Cathedral’s Evening Evensong Service on Sunday, 26 and at the JL Zwane Center in Gugulethu with the Fezeka Alumni Youth Choir, conducted by Phumelele Tsewu, on Tuesday, 28 May 2013.
Their repertoire consists of numbers from a wide variety of composers and musicians, from George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein to the likes of Duke Ellington and Aaron Copland.
Conducted by Gisèle Becker, the choral group is made up of a mix of over 60 undergraduate and graduate students. Though the choir only performs two formal concerts during their academic year, they’ve graced the stage of numerous high-profile venues, like the Washington National Cathedral, and will certainly put on another enthralling series of concerts in Mzansi. They travel to different destinations in the world every other year; past tours have included South America, Romania, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy.
Aside from performing on stage, the singing group will also visit the Bokamoso Youth Center and the Baphumelele Children’s Home.
