Green Point Urban Park is a haven in the heart of the bustling Mother City. It has something for everyone: Outdoor gyms, picnic spots, a coffee shop, water features, kids play areas, plus it is dog friendly and has gorgeous views that are perfect for an Instagram post. Although this gem has been around for a while, it still has some surprises. Here are 5 you may not know about.

The Urban Park houses a Biodiversity Showcase Garden with over 300 different plant species. You can find a variety of flora indigenous to the Cape, including 25 000 indigenous trees, shrubs, fynbos and colourful flowers. Go on a self-exploration journey and learn more about the biodiversity that Cape Town has to offer.
The Biodiversity Showcase Garden also includes the wetlands and the food and medicine garden. Image: Lara van Zyl
Did you know about the labyrinth in the Urban Park? Labyrinths have been an important spiritual contemplative tool for some cultures for thousands of years. The labyrinth is an interactive experience: Choose any one of the paths and walk through to find the centre. Try this serene activity. It’s fun for all and evokes a thoughtful, meditative state.
The labyrinth was installed in 2012 in collaboration with the City of Cape Town and the Mouille Point Ratepayers association. Image: @livingitupcpt
The Urban Park offers another interactive experience: The analemmatic sundial. If you stand on today’s date, on the figure 8 shape with your back to the sun and your arms stretched above your head, your body will cast a shadow indicating the time. How amazing is that? This activity works for all seasons and dates throughout the year.

Celebrate South African history by visiting the Khoi exhibition. The exhibition showcases the mobile huts that the Khoikhoi built and lived in while on the move to new pastures. This has been a part of the park since it was first built as a reference to the First Nations that would have used the area.

The Park Café is situated in the heart of the Urban Park. It offers affordable food ranging from R30-R100. Whether you’re in the mood for breakfast, a pizza, sandwich, salad or hot dog, the café has options. It also serves soft-serve ice cream. Play some fun board games with the kids or make some art with sand. The café is also pet friendly.
