Celebrating a decade of events, the Franschhoek Literary Festival (FLF) will once again transform the French corner of the Cape Winelands into a word-filled haven for bookworms, writers and publishers, from Friday, 17 to Sunday, 19 May 2019. The event features everything from a wide range of topical talks and debates to book readings and workshops for aspiring writers and, of course, books upon books that will excite readers both young and old. The festival hosts over 120 authors, journalists, writers and literary legends from across South Africa and the world, so there’s something for everyone whether you’re an aspiring chef, poignant poet or wily wordsmith.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2019 FRANSCHHOEK LITERARY FESTIVAL
A MEETING OF TWO GREAT ARTS: Once more, book and music lovers can look forward to the very popular Autumn Music Weekend concerts, which take place on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, concert pianist Charl Du Plessis will perform a series of classical and jazz favourites, while Saturday will see performances from Christopher Duigan showcasing Chopin’s tremendous skill. Saturday also has a private dinner with Jenny Crwys-Williams and other top authors attending the event at Pierneef La Motte. To book a spot at the dinner email bookings@jennyandco.co.za.
THE PEN IS MIGHTY: Those who dream of becoming beloved wordsmiths themselves can attend workshops that cover everything that an aspiring writer needs to know; sessions will include learning the art of crafting long-form journalism, research tips and publishing suggestions from those in the know.
PAY IT FORWARD: The Franschhoek Library Fund has done excellent work over the years in encouraging a culture of reading by donating several thousand books to schools, upgrading and running various primary school libraries and covering the costs of part-time library assistants. Some of the proceeds from each seat you buy will go towards continuing these efforts and developing children into avid young readers. Email help@flf.co.za if you would like to find out about other ways to be involved.
TICKETS FOR 2019 FRANSCHHOEK LITERARY FESTIVAL
Tickets for individual events at the Franschhoek Literary Festival cost R70p/p and can be booked here, unless otherwise indicated. A limited number of student tickets are available at a cost of R20pp.
