Every watch-lover will know that high-end, luxury watches are notoriously expensive. The limited-edition Chronoswiss range, South African favourite Michel Herbelin Scandinav or even a stunning Tag Heuer Carrera, made famous by Cara Delevingne, make a big dent on any bank account. However, Top Watch in Cape Town's CBD sells all of the above – pre-owned and brand new – at almost half the retail price.

TRY WATCH BRAND WORN BY “KING OF COOL”

Old school film fanatics will know that the Heuer Monaco timepiece worn by American actor Steven McQueen in the film Le Mans was sold in auction for a whopping $2.2 million – a world record-selling price for Heuer Monaco. At Top Watch on Long Street, this iconic brand is sold in-store at half the going price.

It is a classically beautiful watch with a design that hasn’t changed for almost 47 years. What has changed from its 2009 limited edition cousin is the back. The casing in the back is completely see-through, which means you can now see how this famous, calibre 11, watch ticks. 

LOOK OUT FOR THEIR LIMITED-EDITION WATCHES

Chronoswiss is the watch brand made for those who appreciate delicate craftsmanship. It's all about the attention to detail. “Everything about the design is unique," says Top Watch Trader Quintin Hayward. “They only make 2 000 watches per year, and of each watch they make, they only sell 50 units,” Hayward adds. Luckily, Top Watch has 20 units in-store.

They have a wide selection of Chronoswiss watches, but one of Hayward's favourites is the Chronoswiss Skeltec. Although not a pre-owned piece, it's definitely a watch that can become a collector's item and investment piece in the long run. The highly technical, contemporary skeletal design is one an horologist can appreciate.

For women buyers, a popular watch is one you may recognise from the wrist of international model and actress Cara Delevingne, the Tag Heuer Carrera. However, one watch brand that trumps the rest in South Africa is Michel Herbelin, particularly the Scandinav, which "was cancelled (globally) but specifically brought back to South Africa", says Hayward.
