Observatory’s United Nations of partying, Foreign Exchange, is once again hosting a blowout to give international travellers a little slice of home: this time around, it’s in honour of the great American pastime, football, and the sport’s glitzy championship. So, if you’re a US citizen far from Budweiser country or just an impassioned National Football League (NFL) fan, head down to the Cape Town bar for the Super Bowl XVLIII Viewing Party on Sunday, 2 February 2014.
Forex, as the bar is commonly known, will be screening the big final between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks live via their massive projector. And since this is an American fiesta, revellers can expect to munch their way through to the last whistle – there will be an all-you-can-eat buffet with burgers, chilli, hot dogs and all the finger lickin’-good food you’d expect from a respectable football-watching shindig.
Super Bowl XVLIII, which has also jokingly been dubbed Weed Bowl and Bong Bowl because the two competing teams are from the first two states in the US to legalise the recreational use of cannabis, starts at 1:30am local time, but Forex will be opening its doors from 8pm to screen lead-up matches and for pre-game nibbling and drinking.
Even if you don’t know your touchdowns from your Tim Tebows (he’s a former Broncos quarterback, by the way) you’re sure to have a good time at this fun, laidback haunt’s Super Bowl Sunday.
Tickets for Foreign Exchange’s Super Bowl XVLIII Viewing Party
Tickets to view Super Bowl XVLIII Viewing Party cost R100p/p, which includes the all-you-can-eat-buffet, and are available via Quicket.co.za.
Forex will close its doors at 1am to comply with local laws, so be sure to arrive before then if you want stay for the lock-in. Reruns of the AFC and NFC championship games (for the uninformed, these are semi-finals of sort) will be screened before the main kick-off.
Get psyched for the game with this highlights package from last year's final (it gets really magical at 3:58).
Even non-football fans will agree that the best part of the Super Bowl is the legendary ads. Check out some of the best ones.
