Both Stormers rugby fans and players will be looking for a much-needed miracle when the Western Cape side plays its third home game of what’s proven to be a truly dismal season. The not-so-successful squad will be facing the Gauteng Lions at Newlands on Saturday, 19 April 2014; kick-off is at 5:05pm.
“What can you say? We are in a bit of a hole at the moment,” lamented Coach Allister Coetzee after his squad’s most recent 11-22 defeat to the Waratahs. The Stormers have lost all but one of seven matches in the Super Rugby tournament so far, and the recent thrashing was especially painful because it was the first time the team was defeated on home ground. The local boys are now at the very bottom of the log, and disgruntled devotees are blaming everything from the ever-growing injury list to poor management for the disappointing performances.
Meanwhile, the Lions aren’t looking so good either, having recently suffered a crushing loss to the Crusaders at Ellis Park Stadium (it was also the team’s first defeat on home turf); though, they are sitting at a more impressive seventh place in the log and are just seven points below the top-placed Sharks.
So, while both South African teams’ Super Rugby final dreams may be dashed already, both sides will surely be looking to maintain some pride and give their local fans something to cheer about. Good luck Stormers!
