Plus markets, fun runs and youth-led conversations (June 16)
Actor, voice-over artist and comic Sivuyile Ngesi – better known as Siv – kicks off the national tour of his hit show, ‘Race Card’, at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town on Wednesday, 3 October 2012; the sidesplitting and somewhat caustic one-man performance will run until Saturday, 13 October, with previews on Monday, 1 and Tuesday, 2 October 2012.
Inspired by Simon Kilpatrick’s bestselling book ‘The Racist’s Guide to the People of South Africa’, Ngesi and director Brent Palmer successfully co-wrote the show to retain the novel’s hilarity, wit, and satirical essence while saturating the act with Ngesi’s personal experiences and observations. Described as a ‘racially active’ production, Ngesi brings to light (and pokes a fair bit of fun at) the wacky truths and quirks of South Africa’s diverse cultures. This insightful comedy performance hopes to reach out to all walks of life, as well as demonstrate the connections amongst South Africans, making them realise their oneness.
The show debuted at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown this year (2012), and was met with rave reviews and sold out performances.
Simon Kilpatrick’s ‘The Racist’s Guide to the People of South Africa’ was written for foreigners and South Africans alike. The ‘guidebook’ is a parody that’s as politically incorrect as it is exceptionally hilarious, and it didn’t take long for the work to be transformed into a more tangible performance. In fact, Kilpatrick divulged that while writing he thought, “wouldn't it be awesome if a comedian turned my book into a comedy show,” and just six short months after its release, Siv Ngesi was on the phone requesting permission to do just that.
Siv Ngesi
Siv Ngesi’s acting career started at the tender age of nine when he was spotted on the streets of Gugulethu – a township in Cape Town. Subsequently, he went on to tour Asia with ‘Les Miserables’, starring in the coveted role of Gavroshe. He has since starred in ‘Invictus’ and ‘Long Walk To Freedom’, and has shared the screen with Kiefer Sutherland in the hit TV series ‘24’.
Brent Palmer
Grassy Park export Brent Palmer trained as an actor in London, and boasts 10 years experience in theatre, film, television and stand-up comedy. Palmer, who’s had four plays produced, has an extensive CV, including starring roles in internationally produced films, in Shakespearean productions and, most notably, as director of all of Nik Rabinowitz’s comedy shows.
