Lady Gaga Concert Cape Town 2012

Modern day pop princess set to scintillate South African stages

Mother of all monsters Lady Gaga is slated to take the stage and to bring her Born This Way Ball and concert to Cape Town, South Africa on 3 December 2012. The five-time Grammy award winner and thirteen-time MTV award winner will perform music from her third and most recent album, “Born This Way”, as well as from “The Fame” and “The Fame Monster”, her first two albums, which sold more than 15 million copies worldwide.

Supporting acts include The Darkness (an adequately eccentric and nearly forgotten British pop band best known for their hit single “I Believe in a Thing Called Love”) and DJ Lady Starlight, Gaga’s longtime performance partner.

Whether you love her or hate her, admittedly, Lady Gaga is the biggest star to grace South Africa’s stages in recent years. As the brains behind the performance art that’s driven forward the world’s most prolific pop culture juggernaut, Haus of Gaga, Stefani Germanotta aka Lady Gaga deserves respect.

She’s coupled sexually-charged lyrics, skimpy and outlandish clothing and provocative choreography (all brilliant stand-alone high points) with a mantra that encourages the youth (and adults) to love themselves for who they are and what they stand for –  an approach that’s won her a forever faithful fan base whose devotion borders on hero worship.

As someone who endured cruelty and bullying during her school years, she’s become adamantly outspoken about holding fast to your self-identity, and as euphoric and overblown as her dance anthems may be, many of her songs have lyrics rooted in this nobler concept of empowerment.

As a result, the modern day princess of pop has sold over 21 million albums to date, and has logged enough top 10 singles to make even Madonna (her obvious predecessor) jealous.

Aside from her music though, she’s arguably as famous for her off-the-wall guises and her consistent shapeshifting. She showed up to the 2010 MTV Music Awards in a dress made of prime rib, appeared as a guest on a German talk show swathed in Kermit the Frog Muppets, and has all but made leather and foot-long shoulder pads integral parts of a signature wardrobe.

“I am like any other girl. I wake up each morning and put on things that make me happy. Sometimes the things that make me happy are Muppets,” she told journalists at a press conference in New Delhi earlier this year.

What’s more, she refers to herself as a blonde-haired feminist on nine-inch heels, and has so much respect for her fans and her art that even after being bashed on the head by a metal pole during a recent Auckland performance, she finished the show.

Gaga was hardly an overnight sensation though; she grappled with rejection for most of  her life, and was still playing at small clubs until 2007.

“There were a lot of people that didn’t believe in me,” she told one New York Times reporter in an interview about “Born This Way”.

The megastar was a songwriter for Britney Spears and the Pussycat Dolls prior to making it big, and was even signed but then dropped by Def Jam Records.

Needless to say, Gaga has emerged as the 21st century’s most ubiquitous pop star, and if you’ve managed to afford tickets to her Cape Town concert, you’re likely in for a performance set to blow your hair back for years to come.
