Kat and the Kings play at the Fugard Theatre

Award-winning musical set to return to the stage during February and March

After a successful run in Johannesburg, the feel good, fast-paced David Kramer and Taliep Petersen production Kat and the Kings is back by popular demand at the Fugard Theatre in District Six, Cape Town from Tuesday, 12 until Saturday, 23 March 2013.

For the second time this year, the smash hit musical will play in the heart of the area that inspired its setting. Featuring a dazzling, new Cape Town cast and a 6-piece live musical band led by director and saxophonist Don-veno Prins, audiences can look forward to a stage exploding with action and talent.

Kat and Kings follows the journey of Kat Diamond (played by Dean Balie), the self-professed best singer and dancer in District Six,  as he struggles to assert his career in the midst of a repressive 1950s apartheid regime. After singing outside the Westminster Café and performing at The Claridges Hotel in Durban, Kat forms an acappella group, The Cavalla Kings, with his friends in the neighbourhood: Ballie (Carlo Daniels), Bingo (Grant Peres) and Magoo (Zak Toerien).  With a little help from Magoo’s sister Lucy Dixon (Amy Trout), the group’s American doo wop and rock and roll sound soon becomes a sensation in the District, and the rest is history.

Over a decade ago the high-energy performance won Olivier Awards in London’s West End for “Best New Musical” and “Best Actor”, and then went on to receive Tony nominations for its stint on NYC’s Broadway in 1999.

Tickets cost from R80 to R160, and are available via the Fugard Theatre box office and Computicket.com. Performances run from Tuesdays to Fridays at 8pm and on Saturdays at 5pm and 8pm.
