Do you have a poker face? Test your mettle as a straight-faced master of the cards at the bi-annual Series of Poker Tournament at Cape Town’s GrandWest Casino from Friday, 25 to Sunday, 27 January 2013.
With only 100 spots available and a player entry price of R15,000, this no limit texas hold ‘em contest is reserved for the super competitive and pits opponents against each other in a heated battle of wits and intuition. Players will vie for a share of a prize pool amounting to R1,3 million: first prize is a guaranteed R500, 000, provided a minimum of 80 players participate, and the remainder of the money will be divided as per the prize structure.
For those interested in participating but wary of parting with such a huge chunk of change, a cheaper entry alternative does exist. Winners of the Satellite Games – they’re hosted each Sunday and on Tuesday, 22, Wednesday, 23 and Thursday, 24 January - are guaranteed a seat at the tournament. Entry to the Satellite Games is free and participants will automatically receive R4000 worth of chips with which to play. However, as a seat is not guaranteed, it is advisable to book ahead (this will cost players R400p/p). Those that reserve a spot at the table in advance will then receive R9000 worth of chips to up their chances in winning entry to the main tournament.
The poker area will be cordoned off and only tournament players will be allowed to enter; however, passersby and fans of the game can catch a glimpse of this riveting battle from the sidelines. What’s more, on Sunday, 27 January, the finals will be broadcast on big screens in the gaming area so spectators and those who’ve been knocked out of the tournament can catch a close-up of the action on the tables.
Tickets to the GrandWest Series of Poker Tournament
A cool R15, 000 will guarantee you entry to the tournament; alternatively, players can work for their entry by taking part (and winning) one of the Sunday Satellite Games. In the run up to the contest, extra satellite games will be held on Tuesday, 22, Wednesday, 23 and Thursday, 24 January 2013. All players are required to have the registered Sun International MVG card to participate in any of the poker events (for more information on how to register, consult the information desk at the GrandWest Casino). Poker tournament participants are also required to sign an indemnity form.
Entry to the casino is free of charge; parking will cost you a flat rate of R10.
