Gallery Riebeek Kasteel shows off the town’s finest artists

This country village also offers good food, excellent wine + lots of history

Immerse yourself in art and culture in Riebeek Kasteel, the little Western Cape village that’s full of artists, restaurants and galleries. Among them, Gallery Riebeek Kasteel has become somewhat of a landmark for the town since it opened its doors in 2012. It’s the one to head to if you want to see a range of art from the area.

Best of all, this village is close to Cape Town (less than one hour away), which makes it the perfect day trip away.

CATCH THIS EXCELLENT EXHIBITION AT THE GALLERY

The summer exhibition No Holds Barred at Gallery Riebeek Kasteel explores the theme of a world without rules or restrictions. The exhibition features numerous mediums, from oil paints to embroidery, as well as ceramics for which it has become known for.

No Holds Barred will run from 6 December to 31 January. It features artists Lella Kondylis, Andrée Bonthuys, Hennie Meyer, Mark Chapman, Anne Marais, and Lee Hensburg of Freakalee

THIS IS A TOWN FULL OF HISTORY AND GOOD FOOD

As one of the oldest towns in South Africa, the town is full of Voortrekker history, old churches as well as a “post office” tree, which used to be the mail pick-up point for surrounding farmers.

There’s also the Swartland Wine and Olive Route, in which you can hop from one quaint bistro to another with the town’s rustic and intimate food scene (and stock up on excellent olive oil).

DON’T FORGET TO VISIT GALLERY RIEBEEK KASTEEL

If you do find yourself in the Riebeek Valley this summer, the Gallery Riebeek Kasteel is worth a visit. It’s open from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and from 10am to 2:30pm on Sundays. Plus there’s no cost to enter.
