If the song title ‘Johnny Calls the Chemist’ means something to you, you’ll be happy to know that Falling Mirror, the band who penned the 1986 psychedelic tune, are back in the proverbial saddle with a series of special performances at Truth HQ on Buitenkant Street every Saturday until 28 September 2013.
The Truth Sessions in the city bowl offer a two-part insight into the band’s 30-year music history and give fans a chance to embark on a rock ‘n’ roll trip into the past and present that will also serve as footage for an internationally produced documentary on the local legends. The first part of the show will soar through Falling Mirror’s discography from 1979 all the way to 2012, reminding old and new fans what makes the band so great, while the second half will be an experimental jam session that will also include a few covers and some new material from their latest album, which is scheduled for release in 2014.
Calling themselves the great alternative band before alternative was even created, Cape Town cousins Allan Faull, who plays guitar, and singer Nielen Marais (the band name is a play on the combination of their surnames) started playing together officially in 1978; although, they were a notoriously introspective group that hardly performed live for audiences. But despite the lack of stage appearances, Falling Mirror and ‘Johnny Calls the Chemist’, a song about the vocalist’s obsession with a girl who worked in a Wynberg pharmacy, were forever ingrained in the minds of South African music fans and still feature on local radio stations today.
Together with original drummer Patrick Humphries plus recent additions George Den Das on the keyboard and Harvey Cohen on bass guitar, Faull and Marais are set to re-ignite the rock ‘n’ roll flame they lit so many years ago and shed light onto their bright future.
