Bovim Ballet Company to Launch at the Artscape in Cape Town

Sean Bovim, the award-winning South African choreographer, will launch the edgy new Bovim Ballet Company at Artscape in February

The company's first season will run from 3 to 8 February 2009 and will be the full-length version of Bovim's acclaimed Tango Nights.

Over the past 15 years Bovim has made ballet accessible and entertaining for audiences by creating popular works that have drawn in a new young market that thrives on the dynamic choreography that has become synonymous with Bovim’s name.

His works have been presented to great acclaim as far afield as the USA, Russia, Denmark, Spain, the Edinburgh Festival and Ireland, where Queen at the Ballet played to more than 30,000 people with standing ovations at every performance at the Point Theatre in Dublin.

Sean won the Dance Indaba Fringe Award for Choreography in 1995, the National Choreographic Competition in 1999, and SwingTime won a Naledi in 2005.

Bovim has created works for companies such as the South African Ballet Theatre, Dance for All Youth Company, the Bridgette Reeve Dance Company, Cape Dance Company, and Cape Town City Ballet, and worked with individual artists and choreographers such as Mamela Nyamza, Xola Putye and Adele Blank, among others.

* The opening night gala performance takes place on Tuesday 3 February at 7:30pm, beginning with cocktails and a fashion display by Klûk and CGDT. The season runs from 3 to 8 February with evening performances at 8:15pm and matinees on Saturday 7th February at 2pm and Sunday 8th February at 3pm.
