Barnyard Theatre’s 80s VS 90s Music Tribute Show

A musical battle of the decades kicks off the 2014 events calendar at this Willowbridge theatre!

What happens when two decades of music collide? An 80s VS 90s music tribute show, of course! From Thursday, 16 January until Sunday, 9 March 2014, the Willowbridge Barnyard Theatre’s latest production features two eras of questionable fashion fads and memorable music squaring off on stage.

This booty-shaking show brings pop and rock icons of years gone by to the forefront with a line-up that includes everything from Depeche Mode and Right Said Fred to Boyz II Men and Roxette.

What to expect at the Barnyard Theatre’s 80s VS 90s Music Tribute Show

The performance sees two hilarious hosts, each fanatical about their favourite musical period, take to the stage to punt the top songs of their decade to decide which rocked more and produced the best tunes. This musical melee sends the audience on a rollercoaster ride of rock, punk and pop tracks to decide who the winner will be.

While the 80s experienced an emergence of new wave and electro pop, the 90s gave us grunge and dirty hip-hop. Thus, to fairly demonstrate the greatness and variety of sound, the performance starts off with male and female pop stars from each period going head-to-head (think Dr Alban and MC Hammer and Belinda Carlisle and Alanis Morissette).

Once the victor in that showdown is determined, the musical heads in a different direction. A string of one-hit wonders from the 80s, like Cutting Crew (‘I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight’), Nena (‘99 Red Balloons’) and The Boomtown Rats (‘I Don’t Like Mondays’), tackle their 90s counterparts, like Joan Osborne (‘One of Us’), Vanilla Ice (‘Ice Ice Baby’) and Chesney Hawkes (‘The One and Only’).

Once that category is complete, it’s time to give the power ballads a chance to shine. Get ready to sing along to tunes by 80s icons Journey, Bonnie Tyler, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes and 90s legends Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams.

Just when you think this party couldn’t get any better, theme songs and cult classics go toe-to-toe. Title tracks from 80s movies, like Dirty Dancing, Footloose and Top Gun, challenge 90s films, like Men in Black, The Lion King and Dangerous Minds.

After, girl and boy bands, like Bananarama, the Spice Girls and Boyz II Men, do their thing, and then the show takes a turn for the best when musical superstars Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Cher, Diana Ross, Madonna, Tina Turner and many more bring hit after hit to the stage for an all-out performance of never-ending anthems!

Whatever your taste in tunes, don your legwarmers, dungarees and jean(s) jackets for a thrilling trip through two decades of top tracks.
