“The different cultures are so diverse that, ironically, they seem to belong together”- Anton Crone
Well-known travel journalist, Anton Crone, is launching his new photographic exhibition at the Holistic Healing and Creative Centre in Woodstock on Friday, 11 November 2016. The exhibition is titled ‘THE WATERMELON GANG & Other Woodstock Characters’, and challenges you to explore an area of Cape Town that is well-known for its history and culture.
Woodstock is seen as a very trendy area, but very few people make the effort to move away from those nouveau riche areas and immerse themselves in the true Woodstock. The people of this area are faced with a constant struggle against gentrification and the increasing modernisation of the building infrastructure, to their disadvantage. This exhibition is an in-depth look at the people that make Woodstock one of the most interesting communities in Cape Town.
Anton Crone is well at home in photographing the community he works in as he spent a large amount of time in East and West Africa, where he originally learnt the value of community understanding. He has also set up his Cape Town business in Woodstock and the works displayed in THE WATERMELON GANG & Other Woodstock Characters are of people he has met in the areas directly surrounding his place of work. Fascinated by the diversity of the area, Anton pushed on into a deeper understanding of the individuals that make up this sensational place.
All the proceeds from any print sales at the event will go to the Al Noor Orphanage Centre in Woodstock. Their mission is to protect children that have been left vulnerable after the death of their parents. Al Noor provides them with accommodation, education, medical, cultural and basic human needs. Every child deserves a home, and this cause could really use your support!
“This suburb of Cape Town is a microcosm of the vast continent of the north. In one block of Woodstock you might hear Arabic, French, Kikongo, Nyanja, Shona, Chichewa and a lyrical brand of Afrikaans being spoken”- Anton Crone
