“Back in 5 Minutes” is a unique typography, art in type and urban signage exhibition showcasing the work of five award-winning illustrators, designers and artists at the popular Cape Town gallery Salon91(on Kloof Street) from Wednesday, 27 February to Saturday, 23 March 2013.
The design-focused display celebrates the art of making language visible and highlights the use of type and sign writing in a metropolitan society.
The artists have each chosen a different approach to the discipline of typography, using fresh and unique styling to demonstrate the creative sphere’s versatility. By playing around with scale, media, form, colour and more, the contributors’ words take on a life of their own and convey a message in a meaningful fashion.
“I endeavored to create pieces which were sophisticated, yet playful. I drew strongly from the local narrative, and allowed my pieces to act as voices of the city,” said 28-year-old participating multi-disciplinary artist Justin Southey when quizzed about his and his fellow creative’s inspiration.
Comprised of Southey, along with freelance artist Ben Johnston, Clinton Campbell of Studio Muti, illustrator Clement de Bruin and award-winning graphic artist Dani Loureiro, the show features a range of typographical works, each illustrating the importance of how visual type can impact audiences and mediums, from print and digital to packaging and signage.
The Salon91 gallery is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 6pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 2pm. The gallery will only be open for viewings on Mondays and public holidays by appointment.
