AfrikaBurn 2008

We want you to think of this gathering as an "invent" rather than an "event"

An evolution in progress.

AfrikaBurn is a creative arts and freedom of expression festival that aims to build temporary community through collaborative arts projects, in a completely non-commercial environment.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Burning Man is just a party…a fantastical amazing mind-blowing party - It is a whole lot more than that.

The Burning Man festival grew out of loose grouping of individuals and organizations who questioned, and continue to question mainstream, highly commercialised society and what it does to the notion and workings of community.

Burning Man’s mission statement states:

“Our intention is to generate society that connects each individual to his or her creative powers, to participation in community, to the larger realm of civic life, and to the even greater world of nature that exists beyond society”.

Like Burning Man,  AfrikaBurn aims to be radically inclusive.

There will be nothing for sale at the event, no vendors, no advertising, not even a barter economy.

The gift economy is about giving of oneself without expecting anything in return - try it, it is truly fulfilling.

Please bring everything that you will need to survive, shelter, food and water and a free spirit.

If you're a bit confused about
the AfrikaBurn name being used now instead of the original Afrika Burns, don't worry, it's not a spelling error...

The team at AfrikaBurn gave us a brief description of why the name has been changed.

They said that “Afrika Burns”, becomes the
AfrikaBurn. The order of description was changed, i.e. that with Afrika Burns, the “Burns” described what “Afrika” does or does not do (which by many was construed as a possible negative). By dropping the “s”, we instead it's describing a “Burn” which is “Afrikan”.
