Decompression is an opportunity for participants of AfrikaBurn in the Karoo desert to regather and participate in a creative and collaborative affair, bringing the spirit of AfrikaBurn to the city for anyone to attend.
Decompression is organised by the AfrikaBurn Special Events team, which is headed up by Sonica Kirsten. It’s an annual event that happens a month after AfrikaBurn; this year, on Saturday 1 June at the Killarney Racetrack in Table View.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Like AfrikaBurn, Decompression is an experiment where participants create the performance, the art, the sound and the experience. Dress up and bring your mutant vehicle (motorised creation that shows little resemblance to the original form) or your bike (and enter the Bike Art Race on the track) and your Afrikaburn spirit.
You can expect sound stages, live music, comedy, DJs, bars, food trucks, artworks, fire and more, but due to the nature of the event, which is community-created, the line-up is not yet finalised but you can check back for updates online.
FOR CHILDREN
Children are also welcome at Decompression. Kid-friendly activities include dressing up, painting, face-painting and there will be a children’s playground area.
WIN A TICKET TO AFRIKABURN 2020
Come to the party dressed in your wildest costumes and enter the Best Dressed Contest. The first prize is a ticket to AfrikaBurn 2020.
REFRESHMENTS
Food trucks serving a variety of freshly prepared organic food and drinks will be available, unlike AfrikaBurn, on a cash basis.
CREATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS AND VOLUNTEERING
If you have ideas, art, or an activity you want to add to the mix, contact decom@afrikaburn.com to make it happen.
Just like AfrikaBurn, the Decompression is a volunteer-created affair that encourages you to get involved in various ways. These include contributing time to assisting the event team in running activities such as setting up artworks and decor or assisting with packing up the event. In addition, there will be a Volunteer Day on Saturday May 25 at the AfrikaBurn HQ in Salt River, which sees volunteers assisting with preparing decor, signage and artworks ahead of the event date.
If you have any skills and some time, you're welcome to help in organising the many aspects that will see this community carnival take shape. If you’d like to take part, contact volunteer@afrikaburn.com to advise your interest and availability.
ATTENDING THE DECOMPRESSION
Hurry to be one of the first 200 people to book an early bird pre-sale ticket at R150. Pre-sale regular tickets go for R200 while teens aged 15–17 can get tickets for R100. You can book online. At the gate, tickets are R250 while children 14 years and younger get in for free. There will be a coat check and a lost and found section and car guards to ensure safe parking around the venue.
