After much success in 2012, the Cape Town Electronic Music Festival hosts its popular behind-the-music workshop sessions at the Red Bull Studio in Cape Town and the Guga S’thebe Arts & Cultural Centre in Langa. From Tuesday, 12 to Thursday, 14 February 2013, prospective DJs, artists, producers and enthusiasts are invited to listen to electronic music icons and  professionals share their knowledge and insight about everything from copyright to the futurism of hip hop.

The panel discussions and talks – they’re all FREE – are part of CTEMF and Red Bull Studio’s aim to bridge the gap that all too often exists between budding beat-makers and success in a complex record-company run industry.

Lead by key players, the sessions will ultimately reveal the inner workings of the music trade as well as equip prospective musos and music lovers with the tools to forge strong careers on and off the stage.

Workshops at the 2013 Cape Town Electronic Music Festival

The programme includes three workshops per day, and each day is themed:

TUESDAY, 12 FEBRUARY: UNDERSTANDING THE ELECTRONIC MUSIC INDUSTRY ( at RED BULL STUDIO)

• 3pm: The sessions kick off at the Red Bull Studio with a discussion by Duncan Ringrose, David Chislett and Esa Williams about opportunities in the music industry. Ringrose is one of CTEMF’s organisers as well as co-owner of the booking agency sSHADOWORKSs, the sound design company Say Thank You and the rocking music venue The Assembly. Chislett is a music maverick and the author of “1,2,1,2: A Step By Step Guide to the SA Music Industry”. Esa Williams is a renowned South African-born DJ and producer who organizes major electro events at the legendary Sub Club.  
• 4:30pm: In a “Know Your Rights” talk, Hilton “Roach” Roth (co-founder of Krushed and Sorted and African Dope records) will host an in-depth discussion about the rights of an artist. Roth also serves on the board of The Merlin Network (a global rights agency for independent music) for South Africa,
• 6pm: Get the 411 on the history of hip hop with one of the genre’s most innovative production pioneers, Mantronix, and with Sayyid, a member of the revolutionary crew Antipop Consortium. The two thought-leaders will discuss the origins of hip hop, it’s fascination with futurism (or “dropping science”) and its major influence on South Africa’s glitch-hop and bass music scene.

WEDNESDAY, 13 FEBRUARY: MIXING BUSINESS WITH PLEASURE (at RED BULL STUDIO)

• 3pm: On day two, Executive Producer for Pulse Music Marc Algranti and local film-music composer and electronic music pioneer Warrick Sony speak about the competitive, yet very lucrative, world of composing and licensing music for film, television and advertising.  Algranti’s organisation has worked with Mary J. Blige, Herbie Hancock, BMW and Coca Cola, to name but a few.
• 4:30pm: Join Shaun Duvet and Bruno Morphet, possibly, two of SA’s hardest working DJs and event organizers, in “Under/Over Ground”: a debate comparing and contrasting “larger-than-life” versus “the-music-speaks-for-itself” aspects of the DJing industry. BPM editor Dave Mac will also be present to impart his unbiased viewpoint on the subject.
• 6pm: The hyper electronic afro-pop style that is Shangaan electro has enthralled the music industry and the world (it’s also on the bill at CTEMF 2013). One of the high-octane movement’s founders, Richard "Nozinja" Mthethwa, aka Dog, chats about the genesis of this innovative style and sound in a workshop entitled “Mzanzi Magic”.

THURSDAY, 14 FEBRUARY: BRIDGES FOR MUSIC (at GUGA S’THEBE ARTS & CULTURAL CENTRE IN LANGA)

• 4pm: Day three’s workshops take place at the Guga S’thebe Arts & Cultural Centre in Langa. In his talk “Music as a Tool for Empowerment”, local drum n bass legend Niskerone will give delegates insight into what steps to take when embarking on a career as a professional DJ. The session draws on this talented producer’s own experiences, from growing up in Mitchell’s Plain to becoming one of Mzansi’s most adored underground artists.
• 4:45pm: In “Setting Up Your Bedroom Studio,” audio, film, multimedia institute SAE will deliver a lecture on how producing music has become key to earning a living as a DJ and how many of the young beat-makers start out in a home studio.
• 5:30pm: Sit in on the screening of Resident Advisor’s documentary, “Real Scenes: Johannesburg”. The film takes viewers through the fascinating reality of South Africa’s house music scene.
• 6pm: A definite highlight of the workshop series,“A Cultural Exchange About Music, Technology and Life” with international electronic music icon Richie Hawtin and local house music master Black Coffee delves into how modern technology has and continues to push the limits of electronic music. Don’t miss out on this master class of “technology and its role in electronic music”.

Seats for the workshops are limited and are granted on a first-come-first-serve basis, so get there early; the studio opens an hour before the first session.

DEEP END WORKSHOPS

Included in this year’s lecture series is the intimate Deep End sessions on Tuesday, 12 and Wednesday, 13 February 2013. These elite intimate gatherings offer four flourishing electronic music producers and artists the chance to engage with acclaimed icons Markus Wormstorm and Fletcher Beadon.

TUESDAY, 12 FEBRUARY: HOW TO GET EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED FOR FREE AND THE IDIOTS GUIDE TO COMPOSING SYMPHONIES

• 9am – 1pm: Sit down with Markus Wormstorm ,one of South Africa’s most prolific producers and DJs, leading sound-for-film and advertising composers and sound-designers, for an in-depth session on how to pay the bills while doing something you love.

Candidates must be producers with musical knowledge who can play an instrument(s).

WEDNESDAY, 13 FEBRUARY: USING ABLETON AS YOUR MAIN SEQUENCER? DISCOVER ADVANCED MAX FOR LIVE TECHNIQUES USING LFO'S AND OTHER INSANE PLUGINS

• 9am – 1pm: Aside from being one of Mzansi’s pioneering DJs and producers, Fletcher Beadon is, arguably, one of Ableton Live’s (music producing software) leading tutors and at present coordinates and teaches the “Electronic Music Production in Ableton Live (EMP)” course at SAE.

Applicants must be using Abelton as there main sequencer.
