Cape Town International Soccer Challenge

A unique opportunity to witness raw talent at the FIFA World Cup Stadium

The South African Under-20’s soccer team will challenge Nigeria, Brazil and Ghana for a prestigious title at the first Cape Town International Challenge, from 8-10 April.

Experience the atmosphere of a World Cup game

Experience the thrilling atmosphere of a World Cup game first-hand. FIFA plans to fill all 68 000 seats at the World Cup Stadium, to host its first ever full-capacity, night time event and its first international football event.

The City of Cape Town, the South African Football Association and the Provincial Government of The Western Cape anticipate that the new addition will become an annual event and leave a legacy long after the FIFA World Cup 2010 events.

Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson has stressed that the event is accessible to all the people of Cape Town and the Western Cape. He has urged football fans to attend in their numbers, in order to test the stadium for the biggest event of all.

SA under-20’s team: a force to be reckoned with

The South African under-20’s team presents a soccer force to be reckoned with. In 2009, they reached the semi-finals of the FIFA Under-20’s World Cup in Egypt.

The team has produced stars such as Benni McCarthy, who became the highest scorer in Bafana Bafana’s history and has played club football for Portugal’s Porto and England’s Blackburn Rovers. Matthew Booth returned to Mamelodi Sundowns after stints at FC Rostov and Krylia Sovetov Samara, in Russia.

“The City is committed to showcasing the raw talent of our youth,” Neilson added, “Some of the players in these teams will become household names in a few years and may even compete in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil”.

South Africa will go head-to-head with ten-time South American Youth Championship Winners, Brazil, African Youth Championship Winners, Nigeria and current FIFA Under-20 World Champion’s, Ghana.
