Ajax Cape Town win Telkom Knock-Out Cup

Victory nets Ajax Cape Town R4.25 million

Ajax Cape Town beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 in a fast-paced game in front of a packed Chatsworth Stadium in December 2008 to claim the Telkom Knock-Out title.

The country’s 16 best teams participate in the annual tournament that runs for two months. Ajax’s victory netted the team R4.25 million from Telkom, who have been sponsoring this key South African soccer tournament since 2006.

The Ajax camp erupted from the bench at the final whistle as the celebrations began. The Urban Warriors fully deserved their victory as their team effort laid the foundation for the monumental win.

Each player in red and white played his part in bringing this trophy to Cape Town and the Ajax coach alluded to this in the post match press conference.

“We did not have a plan for any specific player but worked to invalidate Pirates as a unit. My players worked hard at training all week and now they can taste the fruits of their success,” he said.

Mabhudi Khenyeza won the Man of the Match award for working tirelessly all night covering every blade of grass on the pitch. A modest Khenyeza paid tribute to his team-mates during his acceptance speech saying: “This victory was a team effort and I could not have scored without the hard work of my team mates.”

Well done to Ajax Cape Town! South African soccer is heating up, and of course the 2010 Soccer World Cup is a major reason for that.

Ajax Cape Town announced on 8 October 2009, that the head coach, Muhsin Ertugral has resigned and dutch coach Foppe de Haan will be taking his place. Read more in our article about the coach's departure and the new Ajax coach: Introducing the New Coach for Ajax Cape Town.
