For the first time ever Kuier@TheCastle is on for two days. It’s the CBD’s biggest family artisanal market with over 200 vendors (great for unique festive gifts). You can also make sandals, jewellery and candles, and kids can try any of the festive-themed workshops. Here's 10 reasons to go this December.
It’s a warm and creative gathering of people from all walks of life. They bring along their families to enjoy shopping from artists and artisans and listen to the stories of the makers while their kids get creative and enjoy a host of activities.
Get a taste of what the market is like:
Kuier’s festive season theme is “shop local, gift thoughtfully”, and there will be a variety of unique and handcrafted goods from local artisans and designers. There’s homeware, fashion, art, accessories and much more.

There’s a smorgasbord of over 200 makers with interesting stories, including ceramists and textile designers, like Whimsical Collection, who do dreamy prints. Kingsdale Emporio, with their tongue-in-cheek, conversation-starter statement socks, has a stall too.
Plus, you can watch various local fashion designers showcase their pieces with a fashion show. The amazing luxury women’s wear designer, Thabo Makhetha, will be there.

This month, you can support Cape Town’s largest plant market. In collaboration with the Cape Town Plant Expo, you can buy a wide range of plants from succulents to orchids, carnivorous plants and more. There’ll also be plant accessories available.

You’ll also get access to all the museums and exhibitions at the 385-year-old Castle of Good Hope. Like the Koena Art Institute, a gallery of the indigenous art, where you can see Khoisan art, film screening and the phenomenal Fired Exhibition of ceramics.

The market opens at 10am and closes at 4pm. People tend to stay for a couple of hours, wandering from stall to stall and into the nooks and crannies of the Castle. The market is in the square under stretch tents, and there’s a harvest table and comfy bean bags scattered everywhere.

Make yourself something special for the holidays, or create a gift for a friend at one of the 13 creative workshops stalls. There’s mosaic jewellery and candle making, painting, beading, gingerbread house decorating, drumming, African pop art and much more.
There’s even a cobbler workshop where you can make sandals for yourself or a loved one.
There’s creative workshops for all ages and a dedicated Kids Creative Corner. Image: Kuier@TheCastle
Bring the whole family: Kids under seven get in for free, and it's R15 for pensioners (and students). For everyone else, it’s just R30.

This month you can look forward to Ty’s Bagels, Cape Malay, the Vegan Food Truck, fresh juices from Speedo Juice, The Pink Coffee Club Truck, Little Lemons and a selection of local beers and gins.

It’s easy access to the Castle’s onsite parking via Darling Street, there’s a side pathway from the parking directly to the main entrance. Arrows and signage on the street poles will guide you to the parking. Plus there’s plenty of security.
