South African Beaches Awarded Blue Flag Status
10 Beaches in Cape Town and the Western Cape awarded Blue Flag status

More than 20 South African beaches have been awarded international Blue Flag status for excelling in safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards
standards from 01 December 2016 until 31 March, 2017 for the summer season.
Full Blue Flag status is awarded based on strict criteria of safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental information and management. These are set by the Foundation of Environmental Education (FEE) in Europe.
The Blue Flag programme is currently run in 40 countries globally and interest in the programme continues to grow.
The following beaches in KwaZulu-Natal received the full Blue Flag status: Ushaka, Ramsgate, Westbrooke, Marina, Trafalgar, Lucien, Southport, Umzumbe and Hibberdene. (Map Durban).
For the Eastern Cape (Map Eastern Cape), it was Port Elizabeth beaches: Humewood, King’s and Dolphin beach.
As for the Western Cape (Map Western Cape ), Clifton’s 4th beach, Camps Bay, Llandudno, Fish Hoek, Strandfontein, Bikini Beach, Mnandi, Muizenberg, Melkbosstrand and Silwerstroomstrand beaches all received awards.

There are currently 22 pilot beaches embarking on plans to achieve full status accreditation, with Seaforth Beach near Simonstown being one of these. A pilot beach is offered full Blue Flag status if certain criteria is met within a specified period of time.
An increasing number of beaches are now flying under the international eco-label of the Blue Flag. Worldwide, there are now almost 4,300 Blue Flag beaches, boats and marinas.
