The world of food production is changing rapidly, and with good reason. The earth is heating up, the number of fish in the sea is decreasing at a terrifying rate, and the plastic pollution in our oceans has seemingly reached a level that we can no longer ignore. On both Monday, 3 and Tuesday, 4 July 2017, you’ll be able to attend a workshop on new developments in the world of aquaponics at Stellenbosch University.
For those that don’t know, aquaponics is “a system of aquaculture in which the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic creatures supplies the nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water”, according to Theaquaponicsource.com.

With the current drought situation in the Cape, the crop yield for the 2017/2018 season will, no doubt, be a similar disaster. What will we do when the water shortage turns into a food shortage? There is no easy way out of this situation, so we need to learn how to cope with the circumstances. The team at Aquaponics4Everyone is gearing up to host the most informative workshop in the world of aquaponics. They will answer all of the questions that you might have about the processes, systems and issues associated with aquaponics.
The workshop will also feature speeches from well known industry leaders, giving you the opportunity to learn from the very best. If you are a farmer, then the benefit of this is obvious. If you are not, would it not be useful to know about these technologies? I don’t know if you’ve seen any post-apocalyptic films, but life looks pretty bleak when all our natural resources run out. Dr James Rakocy, who hails from the US, is being brought over from the land of the free and he will be there to share useful information. There is a reason that he has been called the ‘father of aquaponics’.

Over the seminar, the experts will teach you about technologies that they believe will change all of our lives. In fact, aquaponics technologies have been listed in the top ten of ‘technologies that will change our lives’.
