Celebrate Africa Day

Art auction + food fair, djembe drumming, 3-course dining experience

Last updated: Friday, 19 May 2023

It has been 60 years since the commemoration of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963. Join an African month dining experience, go to an art auction and food fair or dance to reggae music and djembe drumming. Here’s how to celebrate Africa Day.

JOIN AN AFRICAN MONTH DINING EXPERIENCE

Celebrate Africa Day through a shared dining experience at The Commons in Muizenberg. The three-course menu, curated by Observatory ice-cream store Tapi Tapi, features African food like mabele and maize manhuchu with roasted butternut, toasted egusi and imphepho-smoked amasi. The evening will include rituals and music, with a great view of the ocean.

Date: Wednesday, 24 May; from 7pm
Cost: R250; book via Quicket

DANCE TO REGGAE AND DJEMBE DRUMS

Try food from across the African continent, stay for a late-night drink (it closes at 2am) or join for a djembe drumming or live reggae night. From its inception in 1995, Mama Africa became an institution in Cape Town, and thanks to its new revamped look, you can experience a more VIP feeling while tasting foods from Nigeria, Zambia, South Africa, Ghana…

Date: Daily, 12pm - 2am
Cost: Varies

GO TO AN ART AUCTION + FOOD FAIR

Riverside College is hosting an art auction and food fair in celebration of Africa Day. The art auction has two very special pieces of art that will be auctioned to raise funds for Iris House Children's Hospice in Bellville, as well as the "For the Love of Nicky" campaign, which is set to help Nicela Naude, born with a very rare syndrome causing lymphatic and vascular malformation, get to Seattle for medical treatment.

Date: Friday, 26 May; from 6pm
Cost: From R30; book via Webtickets
