100 in 1 Day Cape Town

Join this global social initiative festival in promoting positive change in the Mother City

Help make our city a better place by taking part in the first ever 100 in 1 Day Cape Town project on Saturday, 25 May 2013. Part of a worldwide campaign that looks to kick-start community change through citizen-driven action, the social initiative calls on ordinary folk to bring about transformation and realise their aspirations through interactive projects.

From the Northern to the Southern Suburbs, Milnerton to Muizenberg and beyond, this Mandela Day-esque movement pushes everyday Capetonians to stage interventions, a term the organisers define as acts (simple or complex) that are intended to maximise the potential of the city and connect communities.

In the lead up to 100 in 1 Day, each Wednesday, interested parties meet up at Truth Coffee on Buitenkant Street to discuss their dreams, objectives and hopes for their neighbourhoods and devise ideas and plans on how to execute their interventions. While the goal is to have 100 different projects launch on a single day, the challenge posed to members of society is to carry on uniting with each other.

Born in the vibrant city of Bogotá, Colombia in 2012, this social movement has so far infected eight countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador and Denmark, in one year and shows no sign of slowing down. Brought to the Mother City by KaosPilots, an international school for creative business design and social innovation based in Denmark, 100 in 1 Day is championed by 34 student stewards looking to join forces with South African team members as eager as they are about achieving positive change in communities.

Interventions to take part in for the 2013 100 in 1 Day Cape Town

What is your dream for your neighbourhood? What actions would improve the quality of life in your community? How can you get involved?

  • US-born expat and Cape Town resident Athena Lamberis calls upon her fellow residents to take a “Taxi Cab Lunch”. This is no ordinary commute from A to B; the goal is to find out where your taxi driver has lunch, grab a bite to eat with your chauffeur and get to know him or her. Document your interview in any means or form, and share it with your community.
  • Kiara Ramklaas and Yonela Ndila endeavour to run a project called “ART ALIVE: ivukile”. The seven-hour day sees a group of 30 grade-eight learners from a school in Khayelitsha take part in workshops that cover a number of art forms, including drumming, poetry, painting, chess, marimba and writing. According to Kiara, this project aims to bridge the gap between the privileged and the underprivileged. Kiara Ramklaas and Yonela Ndila invite experts in all art forms to host a workshop on the day.
  • The “Big Soup Day Out” is a 100 in 1 Day intervention that takes place in Muizenberg at 12pm and calls on residents to say ‘Hello’ to each other and share a cup of soup with neighbours. This event is aimed at starting conversations, creating awareness of the surroundings and allowing fellow inhabitants to connect with each other.

Though, there are many more proposals in the pipeline that are in need of resources and participation, for more information or to take ownership of your city and host your own intervention in Cape Town, check out 100in1day.co.za.
