Apricot picking at De Krans

Apricots, peaches, wine and more – celebrate summer with fruits galore.

It’s summer in Cape Town and the skies are blue, the Winelands are wonderful and the apricots are too! The trees are bursting with their golden treasure, laden with fruit that give one much pleasure. Children play in the sunshine, while parents tuck into some wine. All around, families pick fruit – and leave with a smile and their sweet loot.

If you’re keen to pick your own deliciously juicy apricots and perfect peaches, then head along Route 62 to De Krans Wine Cellar from Saturday, 21 November to Sunday, 6 December 2015 (apricots) and from Wednesday, 16 to Sunday, 27 December 2015 (peaches). The picturesque estate offers eager pickers the opportunity to fill their baskets, with the apricots costing a mere R5,50 per kilogram. Guests are welcome to bring their own containers, although these can also be purchased at the farm on the day.

The cellar is situated within the lush Gamka River Valley, and is known as much for its port and innovative wine varieties as its fruit. Along with apricots and peaches, it also produces grapes in February and March, so there are plenty of seasonal fruit offerings for guests to pencil into their calendars. Aside from the ample apricots, there’s also a tasting room and deli with an array of wines and delectable meals for visitors to sample. Do note: the deli is open every Sunday from 22 November onwards. Additionally, there’s a playground to keep little busy bees happy.

A RECIPE FOR APRICOT JAM

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups of apricots, diced
  • ¼ cup of lemon juice
  • 6 cups of sugar

Method:

Start by filling five large glass jars with boiling water and leave them for ten minutes to ensure they’re sterilised. Put all the ingredients together in a large pot over a medium to high heat, and bring them to the boil whilst stirring until the sugar dissolves. Boil the mix for a further 30 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove the jam from the heat and leave it to cool. Then pour the water out of the jars and fill them with the jam mixture, leaving some space at the top. Secure the lids of the jars.
