Streetopia Street Festival in Observatory

A fusion of street festival and AfrikaBurn at this unmissable community event

Looking for a funky, friendly and free event to attend that will get you out of the house and interacting with your community? Look no further than the second annual Streetopia festival, taking over Observatory on Saturday, 25 November 2017. This family-friendly community-based event, brought to you in collaboration with the organisers of AfrikaBurn, is open to the public and requires your participation or presence for it to succeed.

Whether you’re an artist, performer or regular Joe with a talent, the streets will be an open space for you to display your skills. If your creative prowess is somewhat lacking, fear not as you can bring an activity or game along and challenge the rest of the friendly attendees. Even if you don’t have anything to contribute (unlikely), your attendance will boost the excitable atmosphere on the day.

The local artists, street performers and volunteers are only half of the equation though. The event will boast a massive market with loads of thrifty stalls offering trinkets and bric-a-brac, as well as a live music stage on the Village Green that will be abuzz with local singers and musicians. Circus performers and a marching band will add a carnival element to the streets as they dazzle attendees along the route. AfrikaBurn’s famous mutant vehicles will also make an appearance, so make sure you bring your kids to catch a glimpse of these unique mobile creations.

A section of Lower Main Road (between Station and Norfolk Road) will be closed off for the event. The market stalls will be located there, as will the awesome mutant vehicles and the wide variety of performers on the day. The Village Green will be the main hub of Streetopia, where large AfrikaBurn-style sculptures and artworks will be dotted around the lawn. The music stage and a range of NGOs and charities will also be located in this space.

If this sounds like a brilliant way to spend a Saturday, then dress up, bring an activity, show off your skills… or come as you are and have a blast anyway.

Entry to the carnival is absolutely FREE! To participate, volunteer or apply for a market stall, visit and follow the instructions in the “Participate” tab.

The event kicks off at 10am and will wind down at 7pm. For more information, email
