Romantic Things to Do for Valentine's Day in Cape Town

Celebrate the day of love and seduce your sweetheart in the ‘Lover’ City with our overview of romantic to-dos!

Love is in the air, cupid is cocking his bow and the shop shelves are overflowing with chocolate, teddies and beautiful bunches of red roses; in short, it’s Valentine’s Day in Cape Town!

Truth be told, it’s one of those days you either love or loathe, but as the second most popular card-giving holiday in the world (Christmas is the first), there are few that manage to avoid the occasion all together.

So, if you find yourself in a (new or old) relationship without a clue of how to impress and woo your ... (insert pet name here), don’t panic, we’ve sourced some of the most romantic places to go and things to do to celebrate Valentine’s Day in Cape Town in 2015.

February is the one month out of the year when romance films are all the rave, and there is no better cinematic experience than the Galileo Open-air Cinema. This year, the lovely people behind the scenes present lovebirds with two options at two different outdoor venues. Whether you chose to spend your evening on the Croquet Lawn at the V&A Waterfront or in the Winelands at the Groot Constantia Wine Estate, one thing is for sure: you will definitely see the love in the air on Saturday, 14 February 2015.

COST: Tickets are available via, and costs range between R70p/p and R110p/p depending on the ticket type. Click through to the individual events for more information.

For an extra special romantic evening, consider booking a spot at African Pride 15 on Orange Hotel’s intimate Artist in Residence concert and dinner experience. The luxury eatery, which is all plush carpets and cosmopolitan design, will be hosting a decadent Valentine’s Day show with Jimmy Nevis as well as a bottle of MCC (per table) and a meze platter. Get up close and personal with this Mother City-born pop star at this cosy live music and gourmet food affair.
COST: Tickets for this elite affair cost R395p/p and are very limited. Price includes a meze platter, dessert, a bottle of MCC for the table and, of course, live music. Click through to the event for more information.

Treat your lovey to a screening of the 1986 classic film Top Gun at the Hope@Paul Cluver Summer Festival in the Elgin Wine Valley on Saturday, 14 February 2015. Set in the majestic Paul Cluver Wine Estate amphitheatre and surrounded by a forest of towering eucalyptus trees, this outdoor venue not only offers patrons a romantic spot to spend this international day of love but also makes for a memorable experience. What’s more, the venue hosts a handful of food and drinks vendors as well as serves up vinos from the Paul Cluver cellars.
COST: Tickets are available via and Computicket outlets and cost R100p/p. Click through to the event for more information and tips for a cosy night out.

Love is rare, but your steak doesn’t have to be. That’s the Valentine’s Day motto of Cape Town city centre’s famous single-concept eatery, Headquarters (HQ). In honour of Cupid’s unofficial holiday, the swanky steakhouse is serving up a mouth-watering three-course menu that includes its signature sirloin cooked any way you want it, skinny fries, a tangy green salad to start and a decadent dessert platter to finish (couples also get a complimentary glass of Pierre Jourdan Belle Rose sparkling wine on arrival). What’s more, pairs are also encouraged to make eyes at each other over the chic in-house cocktail bar’s inventive creations. Not to mention, to add that special something extra to this day of love, HQ Restaurant will host swing jazz singer Ricky Botsis before handing over to DJs Gio Ricca and Brett Aitken, who will drop some heady beats in the bar area. And of course, as sizzling as the steak is at this upmarket grill house, the ambience is hotter: expect racy red leather couches, low lighting and sultry tunes.
COST: The three-course meal costs R550 per couple. Booking is essential and pre-payment is necessary to confirm; HQ is taking reservations for one seating at 6:30pm and can accommodate up to 75 couples. To book a slot, phone +27 (0) 21 424 6373 or email

Because The Foreign Exchange bar in Cape Town’s Observatory is anti all the exclusivity of Valentine’s Day, this year the vibey pub is hosting a 14 February party that’s as ideal for those sans a second half as it is for those in committed relationships. The concept for the fun red light/green light bash is simple: guests who are single wear green, guests who are undecided about their status wear yellow and guests who are hooked-up wear red. This way, those flying solo can meet potential partners and those who are taken can still celebrate with their unhitched friends. Not to mention, it’s a great meeting place for those new to the Mother City and a fun and colourful way to meet friends or even that someone special. There will be a range of red and green drinks on special alongside the standard selection of bevies, and a DJ will keep the party pumping on the dance floor right through to the early hours of the morning. Plus, there will also be a photo booth on site to capture all your Valentine’s Day memories!
COST: A cover charge of R50p/p applies, but this fee will be waived for anyone wearing green, yellow or red. Booking is not necessary, and the bash kicks off at 8pm.

There may be many fish in the sea, but if yours has already fallen for you (hook, line and sinker) then why not celebrate the month of love with a decadent dinner with a view at the Two Oceans Aquarium. This special Valentine’s Day evening sees lovebirds being serenaded in front of the awe-inspiring predator exhibit, a tank that is home to ragged-tooth sharks, a turtle and a plethora of sea life. What’s more, couples can explore certain areas of this Mother City institution and experience the peace and tranquillity of this magical underwater world at night before tucking into a three-course dinner. Doors open at 7pm and dinner will be served at 8pm.
COST: Limited space is available and general access tickets cost R485p/p while prime viewing spots cost R525p/p. Price includes a three-course dinner, a welcome drink, tea and coffee as well as live entertainment. Pre-payment is essential to secure your booking; to book, call +27 (0) 21 814 4547 or email

Each visit to this quaint venue offers patrons a unique experience with a personal touch, and this V-day is no different. Lovebirds can order from the a la carte menu, which in itself is a special experience, and guests will receive a complimentary Lanique cocktail on arrival as well as a surprise dessert treat to end off the evening.

One of the cornerstones of a relationship and one of the keys to surviving tough times is the ability to laugh at yourself as a couple; your significant other, of course, being the obvious inspiration. Thus, why not spend Valentine’s Day at the stand-up show at Jou Ma Se Comedy Club at the Pumphouse in the V&A Waterfront. With the relationship guru himself, Stuart Taylor, as emcee and with Andrew Magic Man, Phil de Lange and Westley Cockrell on the line-up for the night, beaus can look forward to an evening of belly-aching giggles and guffaws to celebrate this Hallmark holiday. What’s more, the Mother City-based comedy joint also offers patrons a range of yummy treats on the a la carte menu as well as a two-course V-day special to tuck into.
COST: Tickets to the stand-up show ONLY cost R120p/p and are available via and Computicket outlets. The two-course dinner option costs an additional R180p/p.

Boasting a brand new look, the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Cape Town is the perfect spot to celebrate your love this Valentine’s Day in the Mother City. This city centre hotel is famous for its great location and upmarket ambiance, but mostly it is known for the massive milkshakes on the menu. So, channel Archie and Betty’s visits to Pop Tate's Chok'lit Shoppe and treat your loved one to one of the many flavours, (there are non- and alcoholic flavours to choose from).
COST: Bookings can be made by calling +27 (0) 21 488 2555.
