Boundless Fun at Rush Trampoline Park in Cape Town

Put a spring in your step at this Southern Suburbs-based indoor entertainment hub

It all began with his daughter wanting a backyard trampoline. Looking, however, to create something with a little more spring and flair to the usual department store suspects, Jonathan Goosen began to research the bouncing apparatus searching for the ultimate canvas and spring coil frame that jumped higher and further – literally and figuratively – than any of its counterparts.

After some time, Jonathan came across Rush Trampoline Park – a global USA-based brand that already inhabits countries like Finland, Sweden, Norway and the UK – and it was then that he knew he was onto something. After a whirlwind partnership with the universal jumping-sensation, Jonathan, along with his wife, Chanette launched Rush Trampoline Park Cape Town in August 2015, bringing the much-loved trampoline brand onto Mzansi soil and in turn creating the ultimate ’backyard’ trampoline for all.

Claremont-based – Rush can be found on the third floor of Stadium on Main – the indoor trampoline hub offers jumpers 2 500 square metres of trampolining adventures and challenges suitable for all ages acting as the ideal pastime for those keen for a RUSH to spike their adrenaline by defying the rules of gravity and well, fly.

But why Rush? What sets this trampoline park apart from the many others that have taken the world by storm – there are approximately 700-odd parks worldwide and still growing – since the introduction of the extreme hobby in the early 2000s? According to Jonathan, the Rush-secret lies “in the bounce”, literally.

“It’s in the make – the bounce in the mat, that is the secret,” the co-owner elaborates. “Rush designs and manufactures everything in-house. They weave their own mats, make their own springs, fabricate their own steel and even the lampshades are their own custom design – everything trampoline park-related is made in-house from the check-in counter to the back drop. There are no cutting corners.”

And of course, the Cape Town park’s unique and varied activities also helps to position the indoor entertainment arena a jump higher than its competitors.

“We have one of the largest foam pits in Africa here,” Jonathan exclaims. This section of the park is edged by three trampoline lanes with one slanted for you to jump off the wall and a high-dive board that allows adventurers to literally jump into a trough filled with over 18 000 multi-coloured soft foam cubes. And that’s just one part of the venue.

The facility also boasts over 1 700 square metres of interconnected wall-to-wall trampolines, two dodgeball courts, three basketball slam dunk lanes (one being hydraulic catering for the younger jumper), two long trampoline lanes perfect for doing flips, a battle beam (a ledge on which two participants battle it out using Gladiator jousting beams over the foam pit) as well as a four metre high performance wall perfect for adrenaline junkies.

Of course, the idea of flying through the air does bring to mind the question of safety, but Jonathan assures that watching out for guests’ well-being is very much a cuff that binds all the elements of the park. Every installation meets international safety standards, each trampoline has supporting fabric beneath it, each staff member is a qualified First Aider and is allocated a particular section to monitor while each area has a television that has a tutorial video on loop. On top of that, visitors need to purchase non-slip Rush trampoline socks and adhere to basic safety rules as well as sign a liability waiver, which are explained upon arrival. So essentially, Rush Cape Town is a space where safety and fun meet.

Jonathan and Chanette have thought through every detail in other areas too and have gone above and beyond to ensure that every age group has something to do: toddlers have dedicated jump sessions; teens can jam it out in a secure ‘discothèque’ environment at Cosmic Rush (a club evening in an alcohol free enviornment) and adults can challenge themselves with team building exercises, workout classes, trampoline lessons and even internal dodgeball leagues.

“The nice thing about trampoline jumping is that you go at your own pace,” continues Jonathan. “It’s also a progression sport; today you can do this and tomorrow you learn to do that, which makes it very fulfilling.”

Other Rush activities include ‘open jump sessions’ (jumpers have access to the freestyle main trampoline court and other facilities), ‘X FIT Fitness Training’ classes (an hour-long weekly fitness trampoline workout), ‘Flip-Out’ sessions (one-on-one classes that teach jumpers – adult, teen and child – how to perform trampoline flips and twists) and ‘Social Sundays’ (the ideal space for meeting new people while jumping around).

“We also make it really comfortable for those who are not here to jump,” explains Jonathan. Parents bringing in their little ones or friends who’d much rather soak up the energetic atmosphere while others bounce away can do so in the mezzanine visitor area located on a raised platform, which treats guests to unobstructed views of the entire space.

Boasting amenities like a café (serving handcrafted imported coffee and a selection of delightful healthy and snack foodie items – smoothies, hot dogs and cakes), work stations complete with FREE Wi-fi and a charging station (for both laptops and phones) and flat-screen TVs showcasing live sport games; the mezzanine level is a comfy and welcoming space ideal for any non-jumper. Lockers are available too.

Locally owned, operated and inspired – dedicated to the community and its guests as well as enthusiastic about special needs, obesity, health and fitness – it takes looking at the whole Rush-establishment to really see that it aims to be much more than just a trampoline park: “Rush is not something that is here today and gone tomorrow,” concludes Jonathan. “It’s a passion of ours, a place to reach people [the youth, in particular] and show them that there are many safe, alternative ways to have fun.”

And you have to agree that there can’t be many better ways to have fun than by literally bouncing off the walls. As the indoor extreme trampoline park maintains; if you can walk you can fly… and Rush sure helps you fly.
