Steam Train Trip to Vredenheim Estate

Awaken your inner child with a railroad trip back in time

There are few things that excite a young child more than big machines; from tractors and fire trucks to aeroplanes and steam trains, the simple sight of a gargantuan piece of engineering would get the heart pumping. It’s safe to say that some of us haven’t grown up yet, and spotting a vintage steam train billowing smoke as it thunders across the countryside is still electrifying.

You can re-live your childhood dream of taking a trip across the grassy fields and rocky mountain passes on a steam train by booking seat on a carriage and setting off from Cape Town towards Stellenbosch. This day-trip to the Cape Winelands will take place on Sunday, 9 October 2016.

The wooden-bodied coaches on Atlantic Rail’s SAR Class 16DA locomotive (affectionately known as ‘Katie’) date back as far as 1922. The short trip will end with a whoosh and whistle as Katie pulls up to the platform at Vlottenburg Station. From there, guests will pop across to Vredenheim Estate for a guided walking tour of the sprawling historical farm. You can expect to catch a glimpse of an array of wildlife, such as wildebeest, gemsbok, zebra, ostriches and more.

After the tour, you’ll be treated to a tantalising wine tasting (with red and white grape juice for the kids), before heading over to the Big Cats Park on the estate. There, attendees will have the opportunity to interact with giant felines like leopards, cheetahs, lions and even tigers! This educational experience will let you get a closer look at our planet’s biggest cats and learn a few interesting facts from the expert guides.

All this travelling and activity will surely make you work up an appetite, so join the other guests at Restaurant Barrique for a wholesome South African lunch that will satisfy any hunger. After the grand meal, you’ll then board the steam train again and take the most incredible sunset journey back to the Mother City.
