Ladles of Love Soup Kitchen on Mandela Day

Get involved with this winter-warmer and give 67 minutes to a hearty cause.

Inspired by the spirit of Nelson Mandela, thousands of Capetonians give 67 minutes of their time to help the less fortunate every year on Mandela Day. Whether it is painting classrooms, picking up litter, walking dogs or simply donating clothes, the list of things to do on Mandela Day is as long as the imagination can make it. So to narrow it down, here’s one event you can consider on Monday, 18 July 2016 – the Ladles of Love soup kitchen outside Doppio Zero at Mandela Rhodes Place in the centre of town.

The Ladles of Love team will be serving hearty winter soups and bread to the homeless residents of the Mother City, and you’re invited to take part too by giving your time or a small donation to the cause. If you can’t afford 67 minutes of your time, then a simple monetary contribution or article of winter clothing will be immensely appreciated. You can get rid of that old jersey your mother-in-law gave you, or finally clear out that bottom shelf you haven’t been able to use for years – knowing that someone less fortunate will be a little warmer in the harsh Cape winter weather.

Any money donated will be used to purchase raincoats and jackets, which will be distributed along with other clothing donations at the soup giveaway, during lunch hour on Mandela Day. The need for volunteers is quite large, and the knowledge that your contributions will feed and clothe many people in need will be a satisfying way to spend an hour.

The soup and clothing distribution will start at 12pm. Donations can paid to:
