Blue Rock Waterski |
If you’re on the hunt for some fun family-friendly weekend activities, we’ve got just the thing for you. Following a super cool 2013 event, the Blue Rock Waterski Resort’s beer and wakeboarding fiesta is back on the Somerset West social calendar with a high-flying, beer mug-clinking affair from Saturday, 27 until Sunday, 28 September 2014.
Due to popular demand, the shindig has expanded from one day to two, and thus has also undergone a name change. Though now called the Spring Festival, the to-do can still best be described as an Oktoberfest meets X games style fiesta that offers a smorgasbord of events and activities for the entire family to get stuck into: ale aficionados can throw back litres of 30 types of craft beer, vintage lovers can browse an exclusive selection of retro goods and, since Blue Rock is a premier sports destination, adventure enthusiasts can vie for the third Ice Breaker Wakeboarding Competition crown.
Tucked away on the beautiful slopes of the Helderberg Mountains (approximately 45 minutes outside of Cape Town), the Blue Rock Waterski Resort makes for a perfect city-escape without having to venture outside of the 021 area code.
Not to mention, the good times are in support of a good cause, so guests are encouraged to bring blankets, pet food and anything else that can help the creatures at Helderberg Animal Welfare.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2014 BLUE ROCK SPRING FEST BEER & WAKEBOARDING FESTIVAL
AN OKTOBERFEST WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS: That’s right, expect to chug a mug of beer in your lederhosen or dirndl dress while an authentic Oompah band thub thumps in the marquee. The craft brewers will be offering tastings of their wares; plus, serious hops heads can compete in beer pong and arm wrestling contests, and the on-site eatery will have a menu chock-full of yummy German beerfest-style treats with a twist.
ICE BREAKER WAKEBOARDING COMPETITION: The Ice Breaker Wakeboarding Competition challenges anyone (of any age as long as they can swim) with guts and gumption to battle it out for the title of king, queen or grom (it means young surfer) of the rails. The competition has five different divisions, namely novice, wakeskate, junior boys, open men and ladies. Participants will not only vie for the title of best rider but also a share of the R7000 prize purse.
Blue Rock uses a unique cable system for water skiing and wakeboarding that is safer and more environmentally friendly than the conventional boat method, and the festival is a great opportunity for those who have never been to the Western Cape’s best kept secret to experience the thrill and spills that come with conquering the 7-ha lake.
To enter the contest, visit BlueRock.co.za/ice-breaker-entry-form; entries close on Monday, 22 September 2014. The winners of each category will also take on the Ajax Junior League in a friendly round of Fives Futbol. Entries cost R330p/p for Blue Rock members and R380p/p for non-members; both prices include full access to both days of the festival and a VIP armband.
FIVES FUTBOL SOCCER CHALLENGE: Aside from the action on the lake, festival-goers can check out the Ajax Junior League take on local TV celebs and eager footie-mad attendees in a series of five-a-side soccer matches. If you fancy yourself a bit of a football aficionado or a budding soccer star, this is your chance to show these spritely young’uns how it’s done.
LOTS OF OUTDOOR FUN: The Blue Rock ‘beach’ will also be tricked-out with lilos, and attendees both young and old can slot in some sand castle building, shoot down the fufi slide (it’s the longest in the Western Cape), have fun in the water park and the special children’s play area or just laze about on the exquisite property drinking in the day’s live music.
