Cableway Charity Challenge

How many times could you run up Table Mountain for a good cause?

If you consider yourself a fit and nimble trail runner, then dare to push your limits at this annual endurance race. The next Cableway Charity Challenge, which sees intrepid athletes summit Table Mountain via the Platteklip Gorge route as many times as they can between sunrise and sunset, will take place on Saturday, 21 April 2018.

The course comprises 800 steps, a 760m climb and 2.1km of rocky terrain, so this is definitely not a race for the faint-hearted. Race participants then get a free lift via the cable car back to the bottom to start the summit all over again.

Spanning a total distance of 5.5km, each lap should take contestants between one and a half to two hours on average. The record is 12 summits – can you beat that?

Individual athletes will need to complete at least four summits, while those in teams of two or three must finish at least three summits each. If you are participating as a team, then you can complete the challenge either together or in the format of a relay, providing that your pinnacle goal is reached. The Cableway Charity Challenge is a gruelling test of strength, to say the least, and runners should make absolutely sure that they are as fit as the proverbial fiddle before committing to this mountainous task. This year race is supporting Cool Play, Paedspal and Centre for Play and Learning. 10% of the amount sponsored will be given to Wilderness Search and Rescue who provide volunteer rescue services.
