Jersey Boys in Cape Town

The story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons shimmers on stage

Some things are just too good to be true, like the premier of the international hit musical Jersey Boys at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town, originally scheduled to run from Wednesday, 19 June to Sunday 14 July 2013.

Due to popular demand though, the hit musical is set to light up the stage for an additional two weeks before it absolutely has to close on Sunday, 4 August 2013. “The response from Cape Town audiences is quite remarkable,” says Hazel Feldman, the South African show’s producer. “We therefore encourage people to secure their seats by booking soon, or they may be disappointed.”

The award-winning tale – its reaped 42 major trophies worldwide - follows the journey of four kids from the wrong side of the tracks – Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi – who overcame their poor odds to become one of the greatest groups in pop music history. With 175 million global records sold before they were thirty, the band commanded the kind of fame usually reserved for mention of The Beatles. The musical includes all of the hardships, fights, friendships and successes that led to timelessly popular hits, like ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, ‘Oh What a Night’ and ‘Sherry’, which have been covered countless times by modern artists.

The South African version of Jersey Boys is produced by Hazel Feldman with Bryan Schimmel heading the creative team as musical director. The talented cast features Grant Almirall (Frankie Valli), Daniel Buys (Tommy DeVito), Emanuel Castis (Nick Massi) and Kenneth Meyer (Bob Gaudio). Jaco van Rensburg will take on the role of Frankie Valli at selected performances. The 19-member cast will give audiences a glimpse behind the music, and a 10-piece live band brings the pop culture experience to life.

The company began rehearsals in Johannesburg before flying to Singapore for final on-stage preparations and an 11-week season at the Marina Bay Sands. Now back at home, they hope to continue with successful runs in Jo’burg and Cape Town before conquering more Asian territories.
