The grand dame of burlesque is back, this time at a premier Mother City ...
The Mother City doesn’t take its role as a world-renowned jazz hotspot lightly, and the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival, taking place from Wednesday, 29 May to Saturday, 1 June 2013, is just another occasion to showcase the city’s swinging talent. This time around, the annual event celebrates 15 years at the Baxter Concert Hall in Rondebosch, and yet again, provides young aspiring musicians with an opportunity to play in front of a knowledgeable and appreciating audience.
The festival was founded in 1999 by the late Dennis Barr to hone the talents of players in school, college and community bands and encourage career-building development through education.
Every year, proceeds from the festival go toward scholarships in the jazz studies programme at SA College of Music, sponsorship to the Beau Soleil Music for the Africa Trust and towards the sponsorship of a music teacher at Manenberg High School for the Steelband Project. Donations are also made to participating bands and other music initiatives in the country. In 2013, the festival added Ned Doman Secondary School in Athlone to its long list of beneficiaries, instituting two music programmes for the at-risk youths who attend the school. In addition to all this generosity, institutions like the Athlone Music Academy and York Road Primary School in Lansdowne receive musical instrument donations.
On the Saturday afternoon of the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival, the Chisa Community Outreach Project invites an audience of 620 youths from disadvantaged communities for a special show by a number of performance groups. That morning, the bands entertain seniors from the Lions and Rotary.
