The Deon Meyer Mystery Tour is the perfect way for avid readers to rediscover their love of books and have the opportunity to relive the journey of characters from the beloved crime thriller author through awe-inspiring audio clips throughout the tour.
The Deon Meyer Mystery Tour van (12 peple max) allows readers to discover the significant locations featured in Deon Meyer’s best-selling novels, Thirteen Hours, 7 Days, Trackers, Cobra and Icarus. As you're driving into the city - filled with memories of some of his books - the anticipation builds. A welcome (via audio) of Deon Meyer follows as you're getting closer to the first location. The tour begins at the Grand Africa Cafe & Beach, where you’ll jump into a Deon Meyer-branded, wrapped tour vehicle and set off on your morning of adventure.
Prepare to re-live and delve further into the epic thriller ‘Thirteen Hours’ and re-discover it, the real locations, street corners, houses and even bushes mentioned in the chase.
Your first stop takes you straight into the notorious Long Street chase of Thirteen Hours - where the protagonist runs up the street. Driving up to Long street, you are encouraged to take note of your surroundings as the tour drives through the places which the characters would have experienced.

Driving up Long street you get to understand Deon Meyer's research and how he imagined his character running and getting away. The first official stop on the tour is the church at the top of Long Street, St. Martini Kindergarten. You are taken around the church to discover how Rachel was stuck behind the high walls during her first attempt at escape in Thirteen Hours.
Your drive is accompanied by audio excerpts of Thirteen Hours and other Deon Meyer novels - which are explained by the highly knowledgeable tour guides.
"At 05:36, a woman is running up Lion’s Head. She is young, beautiful, American. And terrified. Because she is being hunted, like an animal." - Thirteen Hours.
You follow the chase up to Signal Hill drive where you hear the narrator on the sound system speak about her terrifying run up the side of the mountain. Many readers imagine it to be up the main Lion's Head path however you’ll discover the real path; a steep and tedious route up which adds a depth to her character accompanied by superbly timed selected audio bits.
This gives readers the opportunity to rethink the novel and enjoy the thrill of revisiting a story with new insights. You are then taken through Higgovale, a suburb of luscious greenery, through which Rachel dashed off too in Thirteen Hours. The group of avid Deon Meyer readers walks to a seemingly dead end - until you walk around a corner and before you is an impressive hidden quarry.
Re-living the chase in one of the most hidden quarries in the city, which Rachel runs past in Deon Meyer's 13hrs. Read about it first, in one of our upcoming @capetownmag newsletters, and get a special CapeTownMagazine.com reader offer for this (new) Deon Meyer mystery tour as well. #capetown #capetownmag #kaapstadmag #kapstadtmag #deonmeyer #crimefiction #audiotours @deon.meyer.author
The hidden quarry is a rare find for most Capetonians; the quarry was used until 1912 for its resource; marble. An interesting fact for all is that the boulders used here were cultivated for its marble and today you can see this in the Standard Bank building, the Rhodes Memorial statue as well as most of the curbs in the city centre.
On your journey you are taken to Carlucci's now called Will’s Cafe and Deli, where Rachel hides out for a while using the phone to call her dad for help in Thirteen Hours. You can grab a bite to eat and a cup of coffee here while you have fascinating conversations with other Deon Meyer admirers. She then escapes out the back where you can see how difficult it would have been for her.
The tour takes you through the suburbs and the city centre, recalling scenes from not only Thirteen Hours but also scenes from Trackers and 7 Days. You’ll visit the scene of the murder from 7 Days; the site of famed Benny Griesel’s attempted assassination; and the snipers viewpoint in Sea Point. Trackers leads us to the colorful Bo-Kaap mosque, followed by the deadly waterfront landing rendezvous. Sites from Cobra and Icarus are also visited.
Both Dave Van Asche (Deon Meyer Mystery Tour founder) and his colleague Paul Louw are well rehearsed in all the books and are excellent tour guides giving snippets of information about the surroundings in a fun and entertaining manner.
The tour is the perfect for a little adventure around the city - exploring surroundings you were probably not aware of as well as rediscovering the mystery and entertainment of Deon Meyer and his best-selling novels. Here you can jump into our beloved crime thriller author’s mind and become part of the story for a couple of hours.
"As avid fans of Deon Meyer novels we were thoroughly entertained to experience the fast-paced story lines 'live'. It was also great to view Cape Town as tourists and discover some hidden gems in our own back yard." - Dirk & Mariaan said after enjoying one of the day tours.
