Balkanology setto bring the banging Balkan Beat Box to SA
The organizers of Balkanology have injected thrilling, madcap Balkan flavour into the SA party scene since way back in 2006. Only they have offered South Africa’s party people the chance to run with the roosters, ride with goats, catch chickens, wake the dead, celebrate a Balkan wedding, smash plates and win elephants, all in the name of a good time.
Throwing the biggest (and only) Balkan parties in South Africa, they are the first promoters to expose our nation to a brand new sound fresh off the boat from Eastern Europe - a mix of gypsy, Balkan and Mediterranean melodiesblended with hip-hop, dub, house and electro.
After all their years of hard work exposing SA to Balkan beats you’d think they’d retire to a village by now to raise goats. But they must keep going, because they have a dream. It’s a dream they’ve had since the very beginning – to bring New York’s incredible Balkan Beat Box to our land.
If you don’t know who Balkan Beat Box are don’t be ashamed, we’ll educate you. A New York-based, eight-piece phenomenon known for their blazing live shows, they have been taking their energetic, legendary stage act to every possible corner of the globe as if they’re a travelling circus. Expect a massive mix of raga, hip-hop, Balkanoid horns, Arabian and Bulgarian guest singers, Greek guitars and more, all coming together in the form a rhapsodic sound system that will force your feet to dance.
Perhaps best known locally after the inclusion of their track Sunday Arak on the Balkanology Volume 1 compilation, they've made the crowds go wild at major international festivals including Bonaroo (USA), Roskilde (DK), Paleo (CH) and Glastonbury (UK).
Balkan Beat Box is centered on its two founders: saxophone player Ori Kaplan, who was once a member of legendary gypsy-punk band Gogol Bordello, and drummer/programmer/producer Tamir Muskat. But it was when charismatic MC Tomer Yose joined them that the Balkan Beat Box was truly born.
Party people can also a set from the man whose name has been synonymous with Balkan beats since the scene first took root in Cape Town, Toby2Shoes. Rounding off the line up in the Mother City will be the Nomadic Orkestar.
Doors open at 9pm.
Bring your own goat.
Prices: R180p/p @ Presold | R200p/p @ Door
