Shed new light on the cultural attractions and artefacts of the V&A Waterfront after dark
A Stargazing Experience at the V&A Waterfront
Feast your eyes on the stunning solar system through high-powered telescopes
To celebrate the first day of a new month, why not spend some time in at the Waterfront? On Saturday, 1 July 2017 the V&A Waterfront has organised a stargazing session for the public to enjoy. Get a stunning view of the solar system with help from a selection of really cool high resolution telescopes.
The constellations that we can see change based on season (and the weather of course, clouds do not make for much fun when stargazing). Because we are in the Southern Hemisphere, and it’s winter; we are closer to the furthest point of the sun. This means we are able to see a specific selection of constellations which include Aquila, Cygnus, Hercules, Lyra, Ophiuchus, Sagittarius and Scorpius. There are a few constellations that you can see all year round - Carina, Centaurus and Southern Cross. The stars were thought to have be first documented in ancient times by various civilizations across the globe. It isn’t possible to know for sure who documented the stars first, but we do know that their names come from greek mythology and ancient Arabic names.
On Saturday, 1 July 2017, you’ll be able to enjoy a group stargazing session by the Swing Bridge, at the Waterfront. There will be loads of stargazing enthusiasts waiting to catch a view of the stunning stars way above their heads. The waterfront is a premier lifestyle location, so before the activity, you can grab a bite to eat and maybe do a spot of shopping. With help from the experts, you’ll be able to gaze at the stars with all the info you will need! The organisers chose the date they did on purpose because they knew the sky would be clear enough to see all the stunning views that the infinite galaxy has to offer (well, not all, but as many as we can see from tiny old Earth).
