Shakespeare in Love at The Fugard Theatre
Don’t miss this opportunity to see an internationally acclaimed stage show, right here in the Mother City!
“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind” - William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare is regarded one of the most brilliant literary minds ever to grace the planet. It stands to reason then that his life would be somewhat of a melodrama itself. Well, we’d certainly like to think so, and starting on Tuesday, 10 October 2017, you’ll be able to see just what went on behind the page, in the mind, life and heart of The Bard, at The Fugard Theatre in District Six.
Before you ask… no, this play is not a biography, rather a creative take based loosely on the life of the brilliant Mr Shakespeare. The original production was created by Lee Hall as an adaptation of the famous Shakespeare in Love film (released in 1998 and starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes). Hall’s production premiered in London in 2014, where it enjoyed immense success, and we are so excited to be getting a chance to see this incredible production right here in Cape Town.
The story follows a young William Shakespeare, pressured by an upcoming deadline and frustratingly suffering from writer's block, desperately searching for inspiration. Instead he finds the lovely Viola along the way. His infatuation with her, and her desperate need for his acceptance (as she is his biggest fan) and to be cast in his next play, sees the pair get into all kinds of mischief, including a spot of law-breaking.
Shakespeare in Love is both a beautiful romance and a witty comedy, all rolled into one stage masterpiece. The Fugard Theatre is the first South African theatre to ever host this production, and the standard set by the original is high, but we have no doubt that the local production will meet, if not exceed, this standard.
SIX REASONS TO SEE SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE’S SOUTH AFRICAN PREMIERE AT THE FUGARD THEATRE
BE THE FIRST: We don’t need to tell you that being second makes you the first loser, and while your mum might tell you it’s okay, we think being first is better. Being able to say you were amongst the first audience to see Shakespeare in Love is a big deal. The opening night is on Tuesday, 10 October 2017 and is set to be a celebration of all things theatrical. Even if you can’t make it to the opening night, this production is a must-see for any theatre buff, Shakespeare fan, lover of laughter or arts enthusiast.
CREATIVE DIRECTION: The South African premiere of Shakespeare in Love is under the theatrical shepherdship of Greg Karvellas as director. Karvellas has put his hand to many a successful play in SA, including The Father, Clybourne Park, Bad Jews and CHAMP, and he is currently The Fugard Theatre’s in-house director. The original screenplay was written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, which was then adapted for the stage by Lee Hall. We have these literary wizards to thank for the beautifully crafted theatre production that you can’t afford to miss this season.
TWO SENSATIONAL LOCAL LEADS: The role of one Mr William Shakespeare will be expertly portrayed by Dylan Edy. This local dynamo has appeared in New Boy, Hamlet and Origins, and enjoyed huge success with each of them. The female lead, that of Viola de Lesseps, will be played by Roxane Hayward. She has starred in Blood Drive, Saints and Strangers and Accident. Hayward was born in Johannesburg, studied theatre in London and has been a part of the international production scene ever since. The chemistry between these two leads will leave you hoping and praying they end up together, but we aren’t giving away any spoilers so you’ll just have to see it for yourself!
CASTING IS EVERYTHING: The line-up of local actors and actresses billed to appear in the SA staging of Shakespeare in Love is impressive to say the least! Along with Dylan Edy and Roxanne Hayward, the cast features 18 other actors and a very adorable dog. Amongst the cast is none other than Cape Talk’s John Maytham who has been cast in the role of Fennyman. John Maytham is a well-known Cape Town radio personality and his familiar voice will bring an extra sparkle to this production of Shakespeare in Love.
MUSICAL MASTERY: The musical aspect of this staging of Shakespeare in Love was expertly handled by Paddy Cunneen. The accomplished composer and conductor will bring his signature quality to this performance and as we all know, ‘if music be the food of love, play on’. The Musical Supervisor position is occupied by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder, who also worked on West Side Story, Cabaret, King Kong and Funny Girl. Needless to say, the music in Shakespeare in Love will be nothing short of perfect.
COSTUMES AND STAGE DESIGN: No play would be complete without amazing visuals. After all, what is a stage play if not a visual feast of theatrical talent? The ornate designs of the fashions worn in the world of Shakespeare were expertly replicated by Birrie le Roux. She worked on The Merchant of Venice, which earned her one of her three Vita Best Costume Design awards. The set on which these beautiful costumes will be shown was designed by Paul Wills, who also did the set design for the hugely successful return of King Kong the Musical.
