South African Navy Festival Simons Town
Mzansi’s men and women in white put on a grand show in this historic coastal town
All you land-lubbers and nautical adventurers, fall in line for the 2013 South African Navy Festival in Simon’s Town from Friday, 5 to Sunday, 7 April 2013.
The holy grail to fans of maritime exploration, this False Bay seaside village fiesta affords a rare glimpse of South Africa’s national navy and provides insight into the training that helps keep our nation’s waters safe and secure.
What to expect at the 2013 SA Navy Festival in Simon’s Town
This annual nautical festival hosts a range of kid- and family-friendly activities and gives fans of maritime history and seafaring combat the coveted opportunity to experience, first-hand, Mzansi’s naval base.
Those who relish in the idea of aquatic warfare can explore some of South Africa’s largest (and, arguably, most expensive) warships and submarines and discover the inner-workings of the country’s defence watercrafts. Alternatively, the less combative (or those with junior seafarers) can simply hop on one of the free tug boat rides and sail through the harbour.
Additionally, the Maritime Reaction Squadron will, once again, demonstrate their anti-piracy (not the Jack Sparrow kind of pirate) simulation and precision drills; also, they’ll show off new additions to line-up, like the SA Navy Sword Drill and more.
Revelers of all ages can also look forward to gravity-defying acts by the South African National Circus as well as the popular night shoot, a sharp shooting exhibition during which a flare is discharged into the night sky and snipers try to hit it with blank bullets (the SA Navy’s answer to fireworks).
Not to mention, the festival hosts a wide variety of food and drink stalls to whet any appetite, and there are arts, crafts, games and toy stalls to entice all ages. What’s more, to keep the little ones entertained, the fiesta’s kiddies area is host to fun and free activities, like the ever-popular jumping castle and so much more.
