Top Rooftop Bars in Cape Town
The views are to-die-for and the cocktails can be deadly
Updated: August 11, 2017
You know what they say; ‘when life hands you lemons, crack open the tequila and have yourself a couple rounds of shots!' I’m inclined to agree, and as such, have compiled a list of rooftop bars in Cape Town where you can rise above the rat race and point and laugh at the mortals below. You may even be tempted to throw spit balls at them if you wish to stretch the metaphor - but I doubt security will agree.

Cloud 9 Rooftop Bar
Flush against Cape Town’s bustling Kloof Nek sidewalk sits the Cloud 9 Boutique Hotel & Spa and located within this CBD-based accommodation spot – just two storeys up – is the Cloud 9 Rooftop Bar. From its perch, the rooftop bar boasts impressive and uninterrupted 360-degree views of the Mother City. Offering never-ending sights of the Cape’s majestic Table Mountain and Signal Hill as well as lively cityscape – wherever you look, there is a view and it is spectacular. What’s more, Cloud 9 Rooftop Bar is open to the public. This means guests – no matter whether you’re staying in the hotel or not – can sip on one of the bar’s signature cocktails, tuck into a light bite from the Sushi Box menu or cool off in the plunge pool. Make sure to come on a Wednesday from 3pm to 7pm, all cocktails are R45 and local craft beers 2-for-1.

The Waiting Room
At the top of Long Street is Royale Eatery, and on top of Royale Eatery is The Waiting Room; a top notch, top tier place to get on top form. The upstairs lounge is chic, yet chilled and features an eclectic mix of live music and DJs. The crowd is as trendy as a hashtag and the fairy-light lined balcony provides a fairytale view of Long Street, Lions Head and Table Mountain.

Rick’s Café Américain
This swanky Casablanca-themed restaurant not only offers some of the best Moroccan food in the city, but they have a comfortable rooftop deck with an incredible view of Table Mountain and Signal Hill. In warmer weather it provides a spacious, sun soaked setting for alfresco dining, while in winter months the always-on outside heaters warm the space to entice you to snuggle up with a glass of Gluhwein. Over lunch you can take advantage of their R69 winter special, as well as a happy hour(s), that run from 3pm - 7pm. The bar downstairs is always buzzing with diners looking for reasonably priced food and drink.

Harald's Bar and Terrace Park Inn Cape Town Foreshore
From its perch on the sky-high 11th floor of the Park Inn Cape Town Foreshore, the Sunroof Terrace boasts an impressive 180-degree view of the Mother City in all her glory. To one side, Table Mountain rises above stoic skyscrapers; to the other, the bustling harbour sprawls out into the sparkling Atlantic. And believe it or not, this CBD-based oasis is open to the public. That means that regardless of whether you’re staying at the hotel, you can sip a cocktail on the rooftop (there’s a fully stocked bar) or tuck into a light bite off the menu. Our recommendation? Come on Fridays; the hotel sponsors live music from 6pm to 8pm and the resident sound spinner, DJ Shylo, gets things quite vibey.

This relatively new addition to the Cape’s rooftop club has a real inner city feel to it with the balcony area being surrounded by some of the Cape’s tallest concrete behemoths. The Tjing Tjing crowd is a creative mix – everyone’s making it or has made it, and this is where they like to chill out. Overall this loft-style bar above Dear Me Brasserie is contemporary, sleek and a mere trap door away from the White Room (an open space for art exhibitions).

The Grand Daddy Hotel
The legendary Grand Daddy Hotel has a lot to offer. The Sky Bar shares its space with a rooftop airstream trailer park (seven vintage Airstream trailers hauled all the way from the States, then popped onto the hotel’s roof). Watch the trailers glint at sunset and lounge back on wooden decks under the protection of a Bedouin tent. There is also the Pink Flamingo Roof Top Cinema which airs classics; think ET, Edward Scissorhands, True Romance et al.
