Rock· a· bil· ly: A style of music that combines rock ‘n’ roll and hillbilly music. Still a little confused? Delve into the oldskool rhythms and electric blues of this rockin’ genre along with the subculture – think 50s-style fashion and tattoos – that’s sprung up alongside it at the Dusty Rebels and The Bombshells Cape Town show at the Old German Club on Saturday, 20 April 2013.

A precursor to a large-scale inaugural festival set to take place at the Cape Town Ostrich Farm on Saturday, 9 November 2013, this mini-fiesta promises to give avid rockabilly followers and inductees alike a preliminary taste of what’s in store in the future.

What to expect at the Rockabilly Lifestyle Show

Rockabilly originated in the bopping decades of the 40s and 50s (think “Grease” and “Hairspray”) with icons like Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash, to name just a few. Now, more a way of life than simply a musical genre, rockabilly is enjoying a revival thanks to a movement focused on fashion, brightly coloured coifs and a ton more tattoos.

The Dusty Rebels and the Bombshells preview show will be a celebration of both the music and style associated with the subculture.

At 2pm join hot-rods, V8s and muscle machines as they head off on a two-hour car run revving through the city before kick-starting the festivities at the Old German Club just off Hope Street at 4pm. Come prepared with your bowling teams and join the competition in a game of nine-pin bowling at the Mother City’s oldest bowling alley and stand the chance to win one of many great prizes up for grabs.

After working up an appetite in the lanes grab some authentic Mexican Cuisine from the El Burro foodtruck or get your caffeine fix at the Deluxe Coffee stall. What's more, a variety of carnival foods, like popcorn, candy floss, hot dogs, coke floats and more, will be on offer; a cash bar will also be available. Not to mention, Miss Happ Rockabilly & Pin-Up Clothing and Accessories, a range for the modern rockabilly, and Dusty Rebels and the Bombshells wares will be on sale to get you kitted in true rockabilly style.

Entertainment wise, catch the Cape Town Rollergirls from the Cape Town Rollergirls roller derby league do their thing while the Cape Town Community Bike Polo team demonstrate their skills (sans the horse power) in the parking area in front of the Old German Club. What’s more, rocking bands, Th’ Damned Crows, Them Tornados and The Pits, along with psychobilly DJ Fred Spider and pin-up burlesque duet Les Blondes are billed to entertain revelers into the wee hours with their unique soundscapes and performances.
