If you prefer swango to tango then get your dancing shoes on baby and start swinging! South Africa’s inaugural swing festival, the Mother City Hop is bopping into town over the Human Right’s Day long weekend, from Friday, 18 to Monday, 21 March 2016, at various vibrant venues around Cape Town. Get ready to hop till you drop!
Tuck, turn, swing out and swirl, grab your partner around the waist, whip and whirl as you learn the ins and outs of one of the world’s liveliest forms of dance. Celebrating vintage swing and big band jazz, the fest will involve multiple workshops and parties, with visiting teachers from the USA, France and Lithuania. You’ll also have the privilege of meeting swing legends Norma Miller (96 years-old) and Chazz Young (83 years-old), both of whom were pioneering dancers in their time.
All dancing levels are catered for, and when you sign up you’ll be asked to attend a level audition that will sort you into the classes best suited to your experience. After you’ve been told your level (beginner/ intermediate/ advanced), you can find your relevant class schedule on the Mothercityhop.com website. A full festival pass entitles you to eight hours of classes with top international teachers, so you’ll be grabbing your Texas Tommy and doing the reverse swing out in no time at all!
WHAT ELSE TO EXPECT FROM THE 2016 MOTHER CITY HOP FESTIVAL
Aside from classes, your pass also gives you the choice to attend up to six hours of classes/lectures in solo jazz, tap dance, airsteps, the shim sham, blues dancing, pantsula, gumboot dancing, African drumming, hip hop, the history of swing, swing in SA and more.
Along with dance, another enchanting aspect to swing is the music, so the Delft Big Band and other top-notch live bands and DJs will be on-hand to bring the jazzy tunes of the era to life. Lindy hoppers will be hopping on planes from 18 different countries to attend the fest, so it’s also a fabulous opportunity to meet and dance with some new faces.
There’ll be a number of parties over the weekend showcasing swing dancing at its absolute finest. The Swing, Swing, Swing party happens on Saturday, 19 March 2016 at 129 Kloof Street at 8pm. The Delft Big Band and The Swanky Doodles will be bringing the beats and there’ll be sexy showcase performances by international lindy hoppers from the USA, Lithuania, Mozambique and France, not to mention a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to say hi to Norma and Chazz.
