Hout Bay Dental Studio in Cape Town
The cutting-edge clinic that’s leading the way in world-class aesthetic dentistry
While foreigners typically flock to the Mother City for the pristine beaches, steamy nightlife, vast array of tourist attractions and splendid natural scenery, Cape Town has become appealing to seasonal swallows for another reason too: it’s a centre for superior dental care.
Aside from the pretty city being a spectacular setting in which to recover from tooth treatments, international visitors are also drawn in by the fact that, here, the value for money is better, the waiting period for appointments shorter, and the quality of the services provided, time invested by the dentists and degree of personal attention received far greater.
One such exceptional Cape Town dentistry practice that places a high level of importance on meticulous individual care and meaningful patient relationships is the Hout Bay Dental Studio (HBDS), a cutting-edge family clinic that caters to a large clientele from abroad (they even have a German and Dutch-speaking practitioner on the staff) alongside their long-term local regulars.
Established by highly-qualified, progressive dental practitioner Andy Effting back in 1983 (it was one of the first businesses founded in the charming seaside suburb of Hout Bay), the studio champions safe, minimally-invasive treatment and a unique holistic dentistry focus, always taking into consideration the well-being of the whole person rather than just blindly treating the tooth.
And a central part of this comprehensive approach is a core emphasis on what’s known as aesthetic dentistry. That is, as the clinic’s committed team of Cape Town dentists recognise that the appearance of an individual’s smile can have a significant impact on their general attractiveness and hence their self-confidence, in every dental procedure they do, they aim to enhance not only the functionality of the teeth and gums, but also the feel-good factor associated with a gorgeous grin.
“It’s one thing just doing teeth and making them work,” explains a good-humoured Dr Jean van Lierop, one of the four full-time dentists at the office (there’s also a visiting specialist and an oral hygienist onboard). “It’s another thing to also create beauty and balance, and improve comfort.”
Thus, in addition to pulling this focus through the full range of services they provide – which includes standard dental examinations and check-ups, complex 3D imaging and a broad array of general family dentistry treatments – they also offer a selection of aesthetic procedures, including professional teeth whitening, bonding, gum reshaping, porcelain veneers and composite ‘white’ fillings.
And they’re in the perfect position to perform them. While, owing to recent advances in technology and what Dr Jean refers to as the “Hollywood factor”, cosmetic dentistry has grown substantially worldwide, the speciality area has also become far more accessible to the public on local shores, largely thanks to none other than the Hout Bay Dental Studio. The always-innovative practice played a key role in founding the South African Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry (in 2010), a body that helps to promote education and positive development in this field nationally.
Needless to say, both travelling visitors and permanent residents in need of dental work would do well to consider treatment at the Cape studio that’s at the forefront of both superior dentistry and sensitive service.
AESTHETIC DENTAL TREATMENTS AVAILABLE AT HOUT BAY DENTAL STUDIO:
Planning your new smile
Looking good requires thought and effort, and creating a beautiful smile is no different. At HBDS, we take a systematic approach to perfection with attention to fine detail.
It’s important to be equipped with the right tools to make a difference, so we use Digital Smile Design (DSD) that allows us to follow a step-by-step process.
This has a number of advantages that include:
- Establishing a full extra-and-intra oral aesthetic and structural evaluation
- Improving communication between the team members
- Providing better education and motivation for patients
- Achieving predictable results through digital technology.
With DSD, patients have the opportunity to get involved in the planning and design of their own restorative or smile enhancement process. This means they can become the co-designer of their own treatment by sharing objectives, desires and expectations with our team.
Professional Teeth Whitening and Teeth Whitening at Home
The answer for anyone seeking a dazzling, bright, white smile, dental bleaching treatments work to remove yellowing and long-term stains and spots (typically caused by foodstuffs, coffee, wine and cigarettes) from the tooth’s enamel, resulting in a handsome grin that’s several shades lighter. Hout Bay Dental Studio offers two effective alternatives: an in-office teeth whitening procedure that employs a carefully-controlled, safe amount of peroxide gel, and a take-home bleaching kit that involves the more long-term use of a lower-concentration, self-applied peroxide mix. While the effects of the professional in-house treatment are generally evident after just one short (one to two hour) session, the slower at-home system demands more patience: the gel must be applied overnight and for a brief period daily over two or more weeks for results to be seen. Though the sparkling effects can ultimately last several months and even years (this varies greatly from individual to individual), the team at this cutting-edge dental clinic will also gladly provide clients will helpful advice on how best to maintain the lustrous appearance.
An especially effective aesthetic service, gum reshaping is a great option for those embarrassed about a gummy grin, a phenomenon that sees the gums reach down too far over the front surface of the teeth, resulting in an overly pink grin and teeth that appear short and stubby. During the procedure, a scalpel, or more often a laser, is used to ‘cut’ cleanly away at and push back the excess soft tissue (under a local anaesthetic), greatly improving the attractiveness of the mouth. Though it may seem like a painful, invasive treatment, it is, in fact, relatively simple, doesn’t involve much bleeding, and the recovery time is remarkably quick (generally only one or two days).
With this procedure as a cosmetic treatment alternative, individuals can, in essence, now redesign their whole oral appearance. Dental veneers are thin layers of laminate porcelain that are sealed over the top of teeth to significantly change undesirable colour, alignment or shape synthetically, without actually altering the physical tooth structure. They’re a highly popular option as they can be used to successfully yield a complete makeover of the mouth and a beautifully bright, symmetrical smile. At Hout Bay Dental Studio, three sessions will generally be required to complete the process: an evaluation and planning visit, a preparation visit in which teeth are made ready for bonding, and an application visit when the porcelain shells are affixed to each tooth. Looking as natural as the real deal, if well maintained, veneers can keep clients beaming for well over 10 years.
Less is more: Minimally invasive dentistry
Minimally invasive dentistry (or minimally hazardous dentistry) focuses on prevention, remineralisation and, as the name suggests, minimal dentist intervention.
Using scientific advances, dentists perform the least amount of dentistry required in order to avoid removing more of the tooth structure than is necessary to restore it to its normal condition.
In clinical practice, as soon as dentists cut into a tooth they have sentenced that tooth to a lifetime of being repaired, replaced and treated with progressively aggressive and costly techniques. At HBDS, use minimally invasive techniques for early problem detection, decay removal and repair. We strive to minimise the loss of tooth structure during the restorative process, and we use long-lasting dental materials that conserve the maximum tooth structure so the need for future repairs is reduced as well.
This quick, convenient adhesive procedure is the ideal solution for those suffering from unsightly smiles due to large gaps or oddly-shaped, decayed, chipped or broken teeth. Direct bonding – which, though a non-invasive treatment alternative, can be used to re-contour and repair large parts of the mouth – involves the binding of a durable resin substance to the original tooth structure. The material, which is hardened under a light and then shaped and polished for a smooth appearance, is coloured to match the tooth’s shade and hence affords highly effective, natural-looking results and a far more balanced, complete and attractive grin. The whole process can be completed in just one session and, though repair may be necessary from time to time, the effects can typically last between three and five years before any restoration is required.
Composite ‘White’ Fillings and Porcelain Overlays
A popular and often highly necessary dental treatment option, composite fillings, made from a malleable resin-based substance, are used to fill out cavities and restore missing tooth structure with a seamless, natural finish. As the modern material used is now white (as opposed to the silver alternatives of the past), the result is far less gaudy, and more aesthetically appealing. Because, as part of their holistic approach, Hout Bay Dental Studio is a strictly amalgam- and metal-free dental practice, they will also gladly remove old mercury fillings (which can be toxic) and quickly and easily replace them with the much safer composites. If the damage is extensive, the clinic also offers porcelain overlays which work like a ceramic hat to both replace lost structure and strengthen the tooth parts that remain. In essence, both fillings and overlays go a long way to creating a complete, restored, and more attractive appearance.
The Bill: Rates for the various dental treatments vary significantly depending on the circumstances and amount of work required. The price of the professional teeth whitening ranges from R3600 to R6000 depending on the product used, and the take-home teeth whitening kit costs R2700.
