Cape Town pays tribute to Tata Madiba
Enjoy a foot-tapping good time at this annual harvest festival at Solms-Delta wine estate
Looking for things to do with the kids on the weekend in the Franschhoek Winelands? Look no further: for the sixth year, families are invited to eat, drink and make merry at the annual Franschhoek Oesfees at Solms-Delta wine estate on Saturday, 23 March 2013.
What to expect at the 2013 Franschhoek Oesfees
Brought to you by the Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging (Afrikaans Language and Culture Association), better known as the ATKV, this family- and kid-friendly yearly harvest fair pays homage to the rural Boland culture, good ol’ fashioned Kaapsekos and the rhythms of the region with hot traditional musical acts and more.
Though, besides merely providing guests a chance to indulge in the bounty reaped from Franschhoek’s fields, the celebration gives thanks to those - the farm workers – who make the harvest possible.
“In South Africa, we do not always do enough to show our appreciation to the workers of our country,” said Mark Solms of Solms-Delta. “A desire to acknowledge this labour force is the spark that ignited the Oesfees six years ago, and music is the medium for uniting people of all backgrounds on this day of celebration. Anyone with heart and soul cannot help but be moved by the outstanding and authentic music, rich cultural heritage and spirit of togetherness that pervade the Valley during the Oesfees.”
This year, visitors can expect to see the vibrant duo of Vinette Ebrahim (Charmaine Meintjies) and Christo Davids (Errol Pieterse) from local soapie 7de Laan as emcees, as well as noted musos like Mango Groove’s Claire Johnston, Emo Adams and Die Heuwels Fantasties as headline acts.
In an effort to truly thrust the sounds of the region into the limelight, festival-goers will also get an earful of local talent; tunes from the Music van de Caab project managed by Adriaan Brand from the Springbok Nude Girls and performances by groups from the valley, like the Klein-Handjies pre-school choir and the female choir ensemble Soetstemme, are on the cards.
Not to mention, merry-makers can treat themselves to Solms-Delta wines alongside traditional Boland cuisine from the Oesfees kitchen: chicken breyani, venison pie, beef afval (tripe) curry, braai with all the salads and regional delicacies, like samoosas and herzogs.
Little ones will be kept busy at the circus carnival kiddies’ area, where children, under the supervision of the qualified staff from Kidz at Heart, can pick and choose from the range of fun-filled things to do. Three different tents host games and activities, like a circus craft table, face painting, balloon animals as well as outdoor water games and a jumping castle.
