The celebrated author of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Alexander McCall Smith, has written a new play titled The Summer of 1946, which will have its world premiere at the prestigious Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, with opening night on Tuesday, 5 May 2015.  Known for his wit and elegant prose, McCall Smith’s latest stroke of brilliance will run every Tuesday evening at Planet Restaurant until 9 June 2015.

What could possibly be better than dinner and a show? Dinner and a show at the Mount Nelson, of course! Expect a fun-filled evening of absolute finery and finesse with gorgeous gourmet cuisine accompanied by delightful theatre and a nostalgic playlist. The play centres on a host of likeable characters making their way back home after a war via the Mother City.  They assemble for a drink and a swapping of songs and tales at the Nellie (as the Mount Nelson is affectionately known), during which time audiences get to hear their stories.

During the course of the three-acts we meet and experience: the “fishing fleet” ladies who travelled to India; love and beauty in the Australian outback; and Tickie the clown in the Lion’s Den. With an intriguing and eclectic collection of characters all bought to life by brilliant actors, McCall Smith’s humour and Nicholas Ellenbogen’s exceptional directing, this is one play that promises to deliver an all-round stellar performance.

If the prospect of McCall Smith’s play isn’t enough, guests can also anticipate a sensational three-course dinner prepared by Chef Rudi Liebenberg. Sample a selection of tantalizing canapés accompanied by bubbles in the Conservatory Bar and then move to the restaurant for the main affair. Planet has a global reputation for its phenomenal gastronomy, so you’re in for a treat!
